Overview
Steel erection in Birmingham and across the West Midlands
Central Birmingham steel mostly goes up on residential and office plots near Colmore Row and Broad Street, where the crane stands in the street under a road closure. Further out, in Aston, Tyseley and the estates by the M6 and M42, manufacturers and distribution firms add extensions and platforms or build new units on sites with room for a crane.
On the estates that means mezzanines, canopies, extensions and platform steel. In the centre it is taller frames, lifted from a crane standing in the street. Work comes from Sutton Coldfield down to Selly Oak, west into Sandwell and out through Solihull to Coleshill in North Warwickshire. Drawings and photographs are enough to price a new unit on a clear plot the same working day.
What steel erection covers
We take the steel your fabricator supplies and stand it up: the frame bolted, lined and levelled, then bracing, secondary steel and light gauge LFS or SFS framing. Old frames come down too, when a works is being replanned. A factory owner can also hand us the wall and roof sheeting on the same order.
What we do
What we erect in Birmingham
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Frames and light gauge infill for central schemes | Residential and office plots around Colmore Row and Broad Street | How much of the frame each crane position reaches |
| Platforms, mezzanines and hall extensions | Automotive supplier factories across the West Midlands | Lines still producing beside the steel |
| Lean-to bays and replacement canopies | Older works at Aston, Witton and Tyseley | Low eaves and the condition of the columns being tied into |
| Portal frames and racking steel | Distribution units near the M6 and M42 junctions | Yard traffic and the order the bays go up |
| Rooftop plant decks and link steel | Hospital, university and public buildings | The hours the estates team allows |
| Frames taken down for re-erection | Units being cleared or replanned | The release order and the match-marks |
The steel erection and dismantling service page explains each stage.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Birmingham
Birmingham enquiries come from all round the city.
Central plots off Colmore Row and Broad Street
Frames, infill walls and rooftop plant steel go up on apartment, hotel and office schemes built out to the plot boundary. See our construction sector page.
Warehouses from the M42 to Coleshill
Portal frames for new distribution units, then mezzanines and dock canopies, go up along the motorway corridors while neighbouring yards keep trading. See our industrial sector page.
Platforms for component makers
Platforms, mezzanines and hall extensions are added to automotive component plants, timed around the lines still running. See our automotive sector page.
Older works at Witton and Tyseley
Engineering and metalworking buildings here and in Aston take new bays, replacement canopies and mezzanine offices, often under low eaves and with tight yards. See our industrial and plastics and metals pages.
Link bridges for hospitals and universities
Rooftop plant decks and link bridges go onto hospital, university and public buildings that stay open, in slots that suit wards and teaching. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Possessions and outage windows
Equipment frames beside the railway and generator platforms at substations and data centres go up in hours the operator releases. See our rail and data centre infrastructure pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Birmingham
Planning a Birmingham frame comes down to these:
- Trailers held until the crane is free. Central plots have nowhere to set steel down, so each trailer is packed in erection order and waits off site until the crane is ready. Every wagon and crane entering the Clean Air Zone is checked for compliance first.
- Street closures and oversail. A crane standing in the road needs a closure from Birmingham City Council, or from Sandwell or Solihull in their boroughs, plus the neighbours’ agreement where the jib swings over them. We apply and set out the traffic management and road closure.
- Cellars, culverts and canal walls. Under the centre there can be old cellars, culverts or a canal wall, and the older estates are on made ground, so outrigger loads are checked and spread on mats.
- Nothing left free-standing. At the end of each shift the part-frame is braced, with permanent members where they are in and guy wires to ground anchors where they are not.
- Panels in a breeze. Towers in the centre throw the wind about, so LFS panels and light members are lifted after the supervisor reads the wind at working level.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Older works at Aston and Tyseley take much of Birmingham’s new steel, and their columns, bases and connections are checked on site before anything is ordered. Under a low Tyseley roof no jib can get over the eaves, so a mezzanine there is built up from the shop floor.
Dismantling runs the other way, to a release order that keeps the standing part braced. Members due to go up again are match-marked and recorded, so the frame arrives at its next address ready to rebuild.

Why Synergy
Why Birmingham firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Frames for the city’s new schemes. New buildings in the centre get their steel and light gauge infill erected floor by floor.
- Lean-to bays for the older estates. Works at Aston, Witton and Tyseley get extensions and replacement canopies tied into frames that are checked first.
- Site changes go back to the planner. Our appointed person and the gang work from the same sequence, so a change on site is re-planned before the next lift.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Birmingham steel work can come with:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Drawings and a steel schedule come first, with the address and the weeks set aside for steel.
-
A site visit then marks crane standings and checks the ground, the delivery approach, lay-down and overhead lines.
-
The lift plan follows from our appointed person, and the method statement and risk assessment set out the bracing that holds each stage.
-
Wagons are loaded at your fabricator’s yard with the first members to go up on top.
-
After erecting, bracing, lining and levelling, the gang hands the frame to the next trade on your programme.
FAQs
Common questions
Our platform steel has to go in during the summer shutdown at our supplier plant. Can it be done then?
Yes. The lift plan and delivery order are fixed before the shutdown starts, so steel arrives on the first morning in erection order and the line area is clear for restart. Send the shutdown dates with the drawings.
Our central plot sits over old cellars. How is the crane set up?
We ask for any record of the basements, check the bearing at each outrigger position and spread the load on mats, or move the crane to firmer ground where a void sits under a pad.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
