Overview
Steel erection in Derby and across Derbyshire
A lot of Derby’s steel goes into buildings that keep working: mezzanines, platforms and support steel for machine shops and for firms in the rail and precision engineering supply chain. New units and extensions go up on the business parks at Pride Park, Spondon and Infinity Park, and student, residential and office schemes in the centre take frames and light gauge walling.
The steel is usually a portal frame, a canopy or plant support steel. We also lift larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames, mostly for the new units at Infinity Park. Our gangs work across the city, from Allestree and Darley Abbey in the north to Sinfin and Alvaston in the south, and in Ripley, Belper, Burton-on-Trent and Swadlincote. We price a straightforward portal frame from drawings and photographs, and the figure is often with you the same working day.
What steel erection covers
Steel from your fabricator is erected, bolted up, lined and levelled by our gang, which also fits the bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS framing. Dismantling is part of the service, for a mezzanine moving between units, say. A new unit can also come to us as one order, with the walls and roof sheeted once the frame is up.
What we do
What we erect in Derby
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Machine shop mezzanines and internal platforms | Engineering units across the city | What the shop floor carries at each column foot, and the machines running alongside |
| Portal frame units and extensions | Pride Park, Spondon and Infinity Park | The crane set-ups needed along each elevation |
| Light gauge LFS and SFS framing | Student, residential and office schemes in the centre | Which floor each pallet of studs lands on, and when |
| Plant decks and access steel | Healthcare, college and office roofs | The plant programme and the roof beneath |
| Canopies and link structures | Loading bays and building entrances | Holding-down bolts and reach from one crane position |
| Frames dismantled for reuse | Buildings being refitted or vacated | Stability of what remains, and marks on each piece going back up |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Derby
Derby’s steel jobs come from these parts of the city and county.
The Cathedral Quarter and city-centre schemes
Frames, light gauge infill and steel for rooftop plant are erected on student, residential and office schemes in the centre. See our construction sector page.
Healthcare, education and utility sites
Plant decks, access platforms and equipment frames go up on healthcare and teaching buildings that stay open, and at substations and water treatment works across Derbyshire. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Workshops in the rail and precision supply chain
Mezzanines, test-area platforms and steel to carry new equipment go into these workshops, fitted around production. See our rail sector page.
New units off the A52 and at Infinity Park
Portal frame units, extensions and canopies go up at Pride Park and Spondon, and on the newer plots at Infinity Park. See our industrial sector page.
Component plants in the automotive supply chain
Platforms, conveyor support steel and small extensions go into component factories around the city, inside the shutdowns they plan. See our automotive sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Derby
Derby frames are programmed once these points are agreed:
- Standing on its own at every pause. The part-built frame is stable at each break, with permanent bracing fitted as soon as the sequence lets it and props or wire guys covering the rest.
- Deliveries into working sites. On a live manufacturing site, wagons arrive in slots set by the site’s own traffic, carrying members in erection order so they come straight off the trailer. Inductions and permits for the gang are arranged before the first load.
- Low land along the Derwent. Riverside plots through the city are low-lying, and on many the yard is paved but the ground at the work face is not, so outrigger positions are checked and mats sized to them.
- Road space from the city or county. Derby City Council handles roads within the city, and Derbyshire County Council those beyond it. We make the application and supply the traffic management and road closure.
- The lift plan before fabrication. Crane positions and the reach from each are fixed while the steel is still being detailed, so the fabricator can size and load pieces to match.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Where a building stays in production, we measure its columns and connections before any new steel is tied in, and your engineer confirms the detail. In a Spondon machine shop, say, a mezzanine can rise on jacks and gantries, or go up on the electric pick and carry crane, which gives off no fumes, while the machines around it keep cutting.
When a frame comes out for a new layout or a move, members are released one by one with the rest kept standing, propped where the sequence needs it. Every piece due for re-erection is marked before it leaves its connection.

Services
More than steel erection
Derby steel work can also bring in:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Pass us the drawings, the steel schedule and the site address, with the weeks your programme allows for the steel.
-
We come out to check crane standings, ground conditions, access for wagons, room for lay-down and what is overhead.
-
From that visit comes the lift plan, written by our appointed person, with a method statement and risk assessment covering temporary stability from the first column to the last.
-
Your fabricator and our planner agree the load order, so steel reaches site as it is needed.
-
Erected, braced, lined and levelled, the frame is handed to whichever trade follows.
FAQs
Common questions
Can the mezzanine in our Alvaston unit go back up in our new one at Infinity Park?
Yes, if the new slab and layout suit it. The floor comes down with every member match-marked, travels in erection order, and the same gang puts it back up. Your engineer checks it against the new building first.
Our site is on a narrow street in the Cathedral Quarter. Can a frame still go up?
Yes, with a compact crane in one position and the steel delivered to suit it. We apply to Derby City Council for the road space and time each delivery to the crane.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

A Derby quote needs the drawings, the fabricator’s member list and the site address. Say too whether production carries on around the steel, and when the frame has to be standing.
