Overview
Steel erection in Leicester and across Leicestershire
Food producers and precision engineers in Leicester need platforms, extensions and new units, and the distribution sheds along the M1 and M69 add mezzanine floors when a contract changes. The universities and hospitals put plant steel onto buildings that stay open, and city-centre schemes need framing on the narrow streets of the Cultural Quarter.
Mezzanines, platforms and extensions make up most of it. Longer frames go up for the distribution sheds by the M1, erected from cranes set up on the open yard. We cover Beaumont Leys, Hamilton and Wigston, Glenfield and Enderby in Blaby district just outside the city, and further out Hinckley, Lutterworth and Loughborough. Drawings and site photographs let us price a plain shed extension the day they arrive.
What steel erection covers
Your fabricator supplies the steel and we put it up: columns and rafters bolted up, lined and levelled, then bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS framing. Existing frames can be dismantled when a food hall is re-planned.
What we do
What we erect in Leicester
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Raised storage floors and racking steel | Distribution sheds near Lutterworth, Hinckley and on the city’s own parks | The slab under each baseplate and the aisles kept open |
| Access platforms and process support steel | Food production halls across Leicestershire | Hygiene zones and the length of the shutdown |
| Side extensions and infill bays | Older engineering and textile buildings at Beaumont Leys and Hamilton | The condition of the columns and bases being tied into |
| LFS walls and entrance canopies | Student and commercial buildings in the city centre | Fixings into the main frame and the order the walls close in |
| Portal frame units | New plots on the estates and motorway parks | Which bay is braced first and how often the crane moves |
| Frames dismantled for reuse | Buildings being cleared or re-planned | An order that leaves the remaining bays braced |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page goes through the work step by step.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Leicester
Most Leicester enquiries come from these sites.
Mezzanines in the Lutterworth and Hinckley sheds
Mezzanine floors, racking steel and dock canopies go into distribution buildings at Magna Park and around Hinckley, planned around yard traffic and shift changes. See our industrial sector page.
Platforms in the county’s food plants
Platforms, walkways and support frames for new process equipment go up inside food factories, fitted into short shutdowns and kept off the hygiene areas. See our food and beverages page.
Side bays for Beaumont Leys and Hamilton firms
Side extensions and mezzanine offices are added to engineering and textile buildings with tight yards, while the firm inside keeps working. See our industrial sector page.
Framing for Cultural Quarter schemes
Light gauge infill walls, rooftop plant frames and entrance canopies go up on student and commercial buildings for developers and their main contractors. See our construction sector page.
Chiller decks on hospital and university roofs
Support steel for replacement plant and link bridges go onto healthcare and campus buildings that never close, with the bigger pieces saved for a vacation. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Substations and the rail network
Equipment frames and platforms are erected at substations and beside the railway inside booked outages and possessions. See our power and renewables and rail sector pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Leicester
Before we give a Leicester start date, we work through these:
- Gusts on the day. A large LFS panel or a long purlin swings in a breeze well before the crane nears its limit, so the supervisor checks the wind at height before those lifts.
- Cultural Quarter kerbs. Around the Cultural Quarter a crane has little kerb to stand on and shares the street with people on foot. When the crane needs road or pavement, the closure goes to Leicester City Council, or Leicestershire County Council beyond the city, and our crew sets out the traffic management and road closure.
- Lifts worked out before the order goes in. Our appointed person fixes crane positions before your fabricator plans the loads, so trailers are packed in the order the frame goes up.
- Made ground by the Soar. Low land along the river and old industrial ground can be soft or filled, so outrigger loads are checked and spread on mats.
- Braced before the gang stands down. Each break leaves a part-frame that stands on its own, with temporary braces or guys until the permanent bracing is in.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
In a Beaumont Leys engineering shop that keeps trading, the first job is a survey of the columns and connections the new members will meet. A platform over a machine line sits under the shop roof with no way in for a crane, so it is built from the floor between the machines.
Taking a frame down follows a sequence planned around the bays that stay up, each member supported before its bolts come out. Members going up again elsewhere carry match-marks, so each one finds its old place in the new building.

Why Synergy
Why Leicester firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Mezzanines for the distribution trade. Warehouses on the M1 and M69 corridors get mezzanine floors put in while the rest of the floor keeps working.
- New steel matched to old buildings. Plenty of Leicester firms work from buildings put up for the hosiery trade, and we survey those frames before tying in new steel.
- The same operatives rig and bolt. Our operatives rig each member off the trailer and stay with it through bolting up.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Other work we can bring to a Leicester steel job:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Your drawings, steel schedule and programme reach us with the address of the plot.
-
On site, we mark where the crane can stand and check the ground, wagon access, room to set steel down and cables overhead.
-
A lift plan comes from our appointed person, backed by a method statement and risk assessment showing the temporary bracing for each stage.
-
Your fabricator loads each trailer to an erection order agreed with us.
-
Once erected, braced, lined and levelled, the frame is ready for the cladders or whichever trade follows.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new unit is on a working distribution park near Lutterworth. How does the crane fit around the lorries?
Crane positions and a fenced exclusion zone are agreed with the park’s management before the first delivery, and heavier lifts are timed around other tenants’ gate slots.
A racking installer follows our mezzanine. When can they start?
Bay by bay, once each one is erected, braced, lined and levelled. We agree the handover order with you and the racking firm at the start, so they can follow us across the floor.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Pricing a Leicester frame starts with the drawings and steel schedule, plus the estate or street the site is on and the week the steel is due. For a mezzanine in a working shed, add a photograph of the door the members will come through.
We also provide steel erection in Nottingham, Coventry, Derby and Northampton. See all the steel erection locations.
