Access and planning for lifts in Birmingham
Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Birmingham jobs:
- Getting there. The M6, M5 and M42 ring the city, with the A38(M) and the A4540 Middleway carrying traffic into and around the centre. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
- The Clean Air Zone. Central Birmingham has a charging clean air zone, so vehicle compliance and routing are part of planning a city-centre lift rather than an afterthought.
- Oversailing and neighbours. Central sites often need the boom or the load to pass over someone else’s building, which means permissions as well as a lift plan. We work out the slewing radius and the oversail early.

Common questions
Can you lift from the road if there is no room on site?
Yes, and in central Birmingham it is often the only way. It means a closure, a traffic management plan and sometimes permission to oversail a neighbouring property, all of which we can arrange as part of the job.
Does the Clean Air Zone affect a crane job?
It affects the vehicles and the routing rather than the lift. We plan the approach and the compliance as part of the quote so it does not become a problem on the day.
Can you move a press or a production line inside a factory?
Yes. That work is usually a crane to get the machine in or out of the building and skates, rollers or hydraulic jacking to move and position it inside. Having one contractor for both removes the handover between them.
