Access and planning for dismantling in Birmingham
Every Birmingham job settles these at survey:
- Crane standing and the way out. Cellars, culverts and canal structures run under parts of the centre, and older estates sit on made ground, so bearing pressure is settled before an outrigger goes down. Sections are sized to the route out, with closures through Birmingham City Council.
- What the plant held. Gas-free certification, cleaning and purging fall to the operator or a specialist, and all of it comes before a cutter reaches the steel. Several certificates cover one shift, so cutting is booked to match.
- What stays standing. Plant holds itself up in ways a drawing rarely shows, so every stage is checked and temporary steel designed in where support runs short.
- The Clean Air Zone. The charging zone covers the centre, and a dismantling programme brings cranes, crews and wagons across it day after day. Compliance and routing are fixed at quote stage.
- Height, access and rescue. Much of the cutting is done off platforms and roofs, so platform positions, edge protection, anchor points, how a section is held while cut and rescue are in the method statement.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Where plant is going back up, at your works or a buyer’s, that decision shapes the method from the start. Items are match-marked and logged as they are freed, joints are undone at flanges and bolts in place of the torch, and parts are crated for the road. Anything sold on as a working machine is packed the same way.
Where nothing is being saved, the money lies in how well materials are kept apart. Stainless goes one way and carbon steel another, cable and non-ferrous are boxed off separately, and steel is cut down to sizes that load and sell. Birmingham jobs are usually part one and part the other, so put the items you want back on the enquiry and the sequence works around them.

How a dismantling job works
- Tell us what the plant is, what it held and which items are being kept, with any photographs and drawings.
- We survey and develop the method, sequenced so what is left standing is stable at every stage.

Common questions
Can an overhead crane come out of an Aston works with the shop still working?
Yes. The bays under the runway are fenced and handed over one at a time while the floor around carries on. Crab and bridge come off the rails, then the runway beams, and the heaviest lifts go at night.
We are handing back a unit at Coleshill, east of the city. What happens to the plant left in it?
The survey sorts each item into what has a buyer, what can be re-erected and what leaves as material. Anything worth keeping is released at its connections and marked, the rest cut and segregated.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
