Overview
Steel erection in Coventry and across Warwickshire
Most Coventry steel we erect is for engineering firms: platforms and mezzanines for the automotive and motorsport supply chain, extensions on the technology parks around the city, and new units with mezzanine and racking steel near the M6 and M69 junctions. Sites inside the ring road are reached by short, tightly curved slip roads, which settle the trailer length for long members and the hour they arrive.
Frames for the warehouses by the junctions are lifted bay by bay from standings along each side. Work comes from Foleshill across to Tile Hill, up to Nuneaton, east to Rugby and south to Kenilworth and Leamington Spa. Send drawings and site photographs of a new unit and it can be priced the same working day.
What steel erection covers
The work is erecting the steel your fabricator supplies: frame members bolted, aligned and plumbed, with bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS light gauge framing. We also take old platforms out when a workshop changes its rigs. If a new rig or machine has to be set on the finished platform, that can go on the same order.
What we do
What we erect in Coventry
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Rig platforms and access walkways | Workshops in the automotive and motorsport supply chain | Rigs and machines that stay live below |
| Frames for new distribution units | Plots near the M6 and M69 junctions | Where the crane stands for each run of bays |
| Mezzanine and racking steel | Warehouses once the occupier is in | Slab loading and the aisles still in use |
| Laboratory extensions and plant steel | Units on the technology parks around the city | Rooms working beside the new steel |
| Canopies and lean-to bays | Older works in Foleshill, Exhall and Longford | Room in the yard to stand a crane |
| Generator and equipment platforms | Data centres and substations | The outage window |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Coventry
In Coventry the frames and platforms go up in these places.
New sheds at the motorway junctions
Frames for new warehouses go up on the plots around the motorway junctions, followed by mezzanine floors, racking steel and dock canopies once an occupier moves in. See our construction sector page.
Platforms for the automotive supply chain
Platforms over test rigs and machine cells, mezzanines in workshops and small extensions go into buildings used by automotive and motorsport suppliers, with lifts fitted around the work inside. See our automotive sector page.
Technology parks on the city edge
Laboratory extensions, plant support steel and internal platforms are erected for firms on the business and technology parks around Coventry, with cleanliness and vibration limits agreed before the first member arrives. See our aerospace sector page.
Yard canopies in Foleshill and Longford
Canopies, lean-to bays and mezzanine offices are added to engineering and metalworking buildings on the north side of the city, Exhall included, where yards are tight. See our industrial sector page.
Link steel on teaching and hospital buildings
Rooftop plant frames, link bridges and access platforms go onto university and hospital buildings that stay open, on days the estates team clears the area below. See our education and healthcare and pharma pages.
Data centres, rail and substations
Generator platforms and equipment frames go in at data centres and substations, and beside the West Coast Main Line inside a possession. See our data centre infrastructure and rail pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Coventry
We settle these five on every Coventry frame:
- Reach mapped at drawing stage. Our appointed person fixes crane positions and what each can place while the steel is still at the drawing stage, so the fabricator plans loads to match.
- Trailers off the ring road. Short, tightly curved slip roads limit the trailer that can reach a central site. The vehicle and its arrival hour are chosen at survey, and members come in erection order so the crane lifts from the bed.
- Wind on sheet and light steel. LFS panels and slender members catch the wind long before the crane is near its limit, so those lifts wait for the gusts at height to drop.
- Coventry City Council or Warwickshire County Council. Where the crane or a trailer needs road or pavement, the closure goes to the city council, or the county council outside the city, and we provide the traffic management and road closure.
- Stable at every stop. Whenever work stops the part-built frame is held, by its permanent bracing where that is fitted and by raking props where it is not.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
A lot of new Coventry steel ties into older buildings on the Foleshill and Exhall estates, so the existing frame and its connections are surveyed first. The eaves in those works are often too low for a jib, so platforms are built from the shop floor while staff carry on a few bays away.
When a frame comes out, the order of release keeps the part still standing braced. Pieces bound for re-erection are match-marked and listed before they leave the site.

Why Synergy
Why Coventry firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Frames and mezzanines for the motorway warehouses. New sheds near the M6 and M69 junctions get their frame, then mezzanine and racking steel once the occupier is in.
- Platforms for the technology parks. Laboratory buildings on the parks around the city get plant platforms and extensions sequenced around the rooms still in use.
- Slung and bolted by the same gang. Each member is slung, landed and bolted by one crew working to our appointed person’s plan.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Coventry steel jobs can also draw on:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Begin by sending the steel schedule and drawings, where the site is and the dates you are working to.
-
We then walk the plot, noting standing positions, ground, the trailer route in, where steel can be set down and any lines overhead.
-
Our appointed person turns that into a lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment show where temporary bracing holds the frame.
-
A load list that follows the erection sequence goes to your fabricator.
-
The gang erects and braces the frame, lines and levels it, and signs it over to the following trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new platform goes over test rigs that must stay set up. How does the steel go in?
Tell us which rigs stay in place. Members come in over a protected route, land clear of the rigs and are bolted up from access equipment, in a sequence agreed with your engineers.
We want a canopy over the loading doors at our Foleshill works. Does the yard have to close?
Only the strip under the lift. The crane position and an exclusion zone are agreed with you, and the other doors stay usable for deliveries between lifts. Yard photographs show us where the crane can stand.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
