Overview

Steel erection in Wolverhampton and across the Black Country

Wolverhampton steel work splits between the business parks on the city’s northern edge, where precision manufacturers add platforms and bays, and the older metalworking yards of Bilston, Willenhall and Wednesfield, where a new frame has to fit between century-old buildings. Warehouses along the M6 and M54 add mezzanine floors.

In the old yards it is often a single infill bay, while a new production hall on the business parks can run the whole length of its plot, and we lift and erect both. Our gangs cover the city, Codsall and Tettenhall, and out to Walsall, Dudley, Cannock and Telford. Drawings and site photographs of a straightforward portal frame usually get a price back that working day.

What steel erection covers

Our gang erects the steel your fabricator has made: columns and rafters bolted and brought true, then bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS framing. Old frames in Bilston and Willenhall yards can be taken down as well, often to make room for the new one.

What we do

What we erect in Wolverhampton

Structure Where it goes up What sets the method
Machine decks and mezzanine offices Production halls on i54 and the northern business parks Finished floors, live equipment and the tolerance the platform must hold
New bays and lean-tos Metalworking yards on the Neachells and Springvale estates How close the crane can get in a yard boxed in by other buildings
Mezzanine and pick floors Warehouses near the M6 and M54 junctions Racking, aisles and the slab under each baseplate
New portal frame buildings Cleared plots across the Black Country The order the bays go up in, and where each is braced
Frames, canopies and LFS walling Commercial and residential schemes inside the ring road How much of the frame one standing can reach
Steel dismantled for reuse Works being reorganised or vacated Holding the remaining frame steady as each connection is released

Each part of the work is on our steel erection and dismantling service page.

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Wolverhampton

Most Wolverhampton steel enquiries come from one of these settings.

    Yards at Neachells and Springvale

New bays, lean-tos and hoist beams go up for fabrication, plating and fastener firms, often inside older buildings where the eaves are low and the yard is small. See our plastics and metals page.

    Clean production halls at i54

Machine platforms, walkways and mezzanine offices are built inside precision manufacturing halls on the park, to the tolerances the client’s engineers give us.

Warehouses on the M6 and M54 corridor

Mezzanine floors and pick platforms are erected in distribution buildings that keep shipping through the work. See our industrial sector page.

Press lines in the supply chain

Support steel for new presses and line equipment goes in at Black Country supply chain plants during the shutdown the customer sets. See our automotive sector page.

Regeneration plots by the ring road

Frames, canopies and infill walling go up on commercial and residential schemes inside the ring road. See our construction sector page.

    Substations and water treatment

Equipment frames and access platforms are put up at utility sites across the city inside agreed outage windows. See our power and renewables page.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Wolverhampton

These come up on almost every Wolverhampton frame:

    • Bracing behind the erection. At every stop, the part-erected steel must stand by itself. Permanent bracing follows the erection closely, and temporary braces or guys hold any bay that cannot wait for it.
    • Made ground and old workings. Former mines, foundries and buried foundations lie under many Black Country plots, so the bearing at each crane position is checked and the outrigger mats sized to it.
    • The fabricator loads to our plan. Before the steel is ordered, our appointed person decides where the crane stands and which members it places from each spot, and the fabricator then loads to suit.
    • Metro lines and road space. Near the tram, clearances for the jib and the load, and sometimes an isolation, need agreeing well ahead. Where the crane or a trailer takes part of the road, we apply to the City of Wolverhampton Council, or the neighbouring Black Country council, and arrange the traffic management and road closure.
    • Trailers packed to the sequence. In a works yard with no lay-down, members come straight off the trailer in erection order.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

When production carries on around the work, new members bolt onto the existing frame only after we have surveyed its connections. Inside a Willenhall works with no crane access, steel is carried in through the roller door and raised on gantries and jacks, or with the electric pick and carry crane, which gives off no fumes on the shop floor.

A frame being dismantled comes out in an order that keeps whatever remains standing and braced. Steel meant to go back up at another address is match-marked while it is still in place.

    Why Synergy

Why Wolverhampton firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Platforms set to an engineer’s tolerance. Manufacturers on the business parks get machine platforms and walkways lined and levelled to the figures their engineers set.
    • Lifting and erecting by the same operatives. Our appointed person plans the lifts, and the operatives who rig each member are the ones who bolt it in, so the plan and the erection sequence match.
    • New bays for established works. Metalworking firms in Bilston and Wednesfield get extensions and lean-tos tied into the buildings they already trade from.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. Your drawings arrive with the site address and the dates on your programme.

    2. We visit to fix crane positions and look at the ground, the way in for trailers, room for lay-down and any cables overhead.

    3. From that visit our appointed person writes the lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment set out how the frame stays stable stage by stage.

    4. Your fabricator gets our erection order and packs each load to match it.

    5. On site the gang erects, braces, lines and levels, and the frame passes to whoever follows.

    FAQs

    Common questions

With the ground checked first. We read any site investigation you hold, work out the load at each outrigger and size the mats to it. Where one position is weak, the lift plan moves the crane.

The route and each lifting point are boarded, and members come in on the electric pick and carry crane or on gantries with spreader plates.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
