Access and planning for a factory move in Birmingham

Points we check on most Birmingham relocations:

Canal walls beside the yard. Some older Birmingham works still load from a yard backing onto a canal. Where a crane has to stand near a canal wall or culvert, we check what it will take.
Bases and services at the new unit. Floor, machine bases, power, air and access each get a date in the programme and are checked before loading.
Getting out of the old works. Older buildings at Aston and Tyseley can have low headroom and awkward door openings. We record whether each machine leaves through a door or a lifted roof panel.
Slabs at both addresses. Skates and jacks put a heavy machine onto a few small contact points, so we check the floor on the way out and the new slab, and spread the load with plates.
Councils and oversized loads. A load-out needing part of a road is arranged with Birmingham City Council, or with Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Wolverhampton where the works sits. Abnormal loads are notified where needed.

How a factory relocation works

Send the old and new addresses, an approximate machine count and the date the plant must be producing again.
Our surveyor walks both buildings and numbers every item on the asset register, or prices a smaller move from a desktop survey.
The quote comes with a programme in move order, plus method statements, risk assessments and lift plans.
Machines are extracted, packed and taken by road in sequence.
Each machine is set on its new base, levelled and aligned to line, then handed over for recommissioning.

Common questions

Our works backs onto a canal. Can machines still be loaded from the yard?

Yes, in most cases. The survey marks where the trailer and crane can stand in relation to the water, and we ask the Canal & River Trust early whether the work needs its approval. Where the yard is too narrow near the edge, machines are skated to the front of the site and loaded there.

Some of the tooling in our works belongs to a customer. How is it tracked during the move?

Each die, jig and fixture is logged on the asset register under its owner’s name, with where it is going and when it travels, so you can show your customer that record at any point.

Can we keep producing while we move?

In most cases, yes, for part of the plant. We move the lines you can spare first and get them running at the new site, then bring the rest across. It means more visits, and it keeps output going while the move is under way. We tell you at survey which parts can overlap.

How are disconnection and recommissioning handled?

We agree who does what at survey and write it into the programme. It is a mix of our crew, your maintenance team and the equipment manufacturers, and everyone knows their part before the first machine moves. Recommissioning is done with your engineers or the manufacturer.
