Overview
Steel erection in Hull and across the East Riding
Much of our Hull steel goes into food and seafood buildings and onto the engineering and caravan estates around Sutton Fields, with more for firms supplying offshore wind. We erect mezzanines and platforms inside production halls, portal frames for new sheds and units, and canopies and extensions on the dock estate. On open plots near the estuary, the wind forecast decides which days the big panels go up.
Bigger frames are within our reach too, such as a seafood processor’s new chilled hall with offices and welfare on a floor above. We work across Hull and out to Hessle, Cottingham, Beverley, Brough, Hedon and Goole, and over the bridge to Scunthorpe and Grimsby. Send us drawings and photographs of a new shed at Sutton Fields and we aim to quote the same working day.
What steel erection covers
The work is the main frame, bolted and lined and levelled, plus the bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS light gauge framing. Old steel can come down as well, when a hall is being laid out again. Processors adding a line usually order the frame and the move of their machinery together.
What we do
What we erect in Hull
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Mezzanines and plant floors | Food, seafood and cold store buildings | Hygiene zones and a clean route in for each member |
| Portal frame sheds | Open estate plots for port and offshore supply firms | Exposure to the wind and the ground at each crane set-up |
| Extensions and extra bays | Engineering and caravan works around Sutton Fields | Whether the existing columns can take the new connections |
| Canopies over loading bays | Distribution and trade units on the estates | Keeping the yard open for wagons during the work |
| Platforms and plant support steel | Process sites along the Humber | Permits and plant that stays live alongside |
| Dismantled frames | Buildings being cleared or rearranged | Holding the rest stable as members come off, with match-marking |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Hull
These are the Hull sites our steel enquiries come from.
Cold stores and food halls
Mezzanines, plant decks and access platforms go into food and seafood buildings, erected in a shutdown or beside lines that keep running. See our food and beverages page.
Sheds for offshore wind firms
Portal frame buildings and support steel go up for companies working in offshore wind, often on large open plots. See our power and renewables page.
Bays and units on Sutton Fields
New units, extensions and mezzanines are built for engineering, caravan and component firms on Sutton Fields and the nearby estates by Bransholme. See our industrial sector page.
Stores and canopies on the dock estate
Warehouse frames, canopies and access steel go up inside the port, with inductions, permits and vehicle rules built into the method. See our maritime sector page.
Permit-controlled process sites
Pipe racks, platforms and equipment support steel are erected on process plant along the Humber under a permit to work, in a shutdown fixed well ahead. See our chemicals sector page.
Roofs on clinics and teaching buildings
Plant platforms and small extensions are added to healthcare and teaching buildings that stay open. See our healthcare and pharma page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Hull
A Hull frame is programmed once these are agreed:
- Estuary wind and big surfaces. Open ground by the Humber gives the wind a clear run at a part-built frame. Large LFS panels, sheeted sections and long light members are checked against the forecast each morning.
- Trailers in erection sequence. Traffic on the A63 can hold a load up, so each trailer is timed around it and packed in the order the crane will lift.
- Ground below tide level. Hull stands on low, reclaimed land, parts of it lower than the high tide. Bearing is confirmed at every outrigger position and mats spread the load.
- Closures with the right council. Road space inside the city comes from Hull City Council and beyond it from East Riding of Yorkshire Council. We make the application whenever the crane or a delivery needs part of a road, and put in the traffic management and road closure.
- Part-frames left braced. Whenever the gang stops, the steel already up is braced to stand on its own, with temporary guys where permanent bracing follows later.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Before new steel is fixed to a building that stays in use, we survey its frame and connections. Inside a Hull food hall the new platform usually has to go in between the lines and under the existing roof, so its members come in through the dock door and are raised from the floor.
Members due to go up again are match-marked while still in place, and the frame then comes down to a sequence planned around the part left standing.

Why Synergy
Why Hull firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Units and bays on Sutton Fields. We erect new units, added bays and mezzanines for engineering and caravan businesses on the estates north of the city.
- Floors and platforms for food producers. We put mezzanines and plant decks into Hull food buildings around their shutdowns.
- The crane planning and the erecting stay with one crew. Our appointed person sets the lifts and the same gang slings, places and bolts each member.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Other services we bring to Hull steel work:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Drawings, the steel schedule, the address and your programme reach us, and we start planning.
-
On site we look at crane standings and ground, how wagons get in, where steel can be laid down and what runs overhead.
-
Our appointed person turns that visit into a lift plan; the method statement and risk assessment written from it show how the frame is held stable at each stage.
-
With your fabricator we fix the loading order, trailer by trailer.
-
The frame goes up, is braced, lined and levelled, and passes to whoever follows us on site.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new unit at Sutton Fields needs cladding and a roof as well as the frame. Can that come with the steel?
Yes. Cladding and roofing can be added to the same package, so the sheeting follows the frame bay by bay once it is lined, levelled and braced. Mention it at quote stage and the building is priced as one job.
Our mezzanine is moving with us to a unit across Hull. Can the same steel go back up?
Usually, yes. Each member is match-marked before it comes down, and the slab at the new unit is checked for the column loads before the date. Any extra steel for a changed layout comes from your fabricator.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
