Overview
Steel erection in Doncaster and across South Yorkshire
With the A1(M), M18 and M180 all close to the town, a large share of Doncaster’s steel goes into logistics: mezzanines, pick platforms and dock canopies at iPort, the Airport Business Park and Balby Carr, and new portal frame units by the motorway junctions. Works up the lower Don Valley towards Mexborough and Swinton add bays and platform steel to older buildings.
Alongside the logistics work we erect extensions and plant support steel, and a distribution shed of any length by the junctions goes up with cranes we supply. Enquiries come from Balby, Armthorpe, Thorne and Mexborough, from Rotherham and Barnsley, and from north Nottinghamshire and north Lincolnshire to the south and east. A same-day price on a single-bay unit needs only the drawings and some photographs.
What steel erection covers
Erection covers the frame from your fabricator, bolted and plumbed, plus its bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS framing. When an old frame has to come down for reuse or a new layout, we dismantle it.
What we do
What we erect in Doncaster
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Walkways and platforms over conveyors | Distribution sheds at iPort, the Airport Business Park and Balby Carr | Keeping each lift clear of the sortation equipment below |
| Mezzanines in warehouses | Trade units and smaller sheds across the borough | Slab capacity under each column and the door the steel comes in by |
| Portal frame units | New plots by the A1(M) and M18 junctions | How far along the building the crane reaches from each set-up |
| Extensions to older works | Manufacturing and fabrication buildings in the lower Don Valley | What the survey finds in the existing columns |
| Canopies over dock doors | Loading yards on the logistics parks | Fixings into the existing frame and cladding rails |
| Steel taken down for reuse | Units changing occupier or layout | Release order, and match-marks for re-erection |
How the work runs from survey to handover is on our steel erection and dismantling service page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Doncaster
Doncaster enquiries come from the logistics parks, the valley works and a handful of other places.
Older works from Conisbrough to Swinton
New bays, lean-tos and platform steel are added to steel processing, fabrication and manufacturing buildings up the valley through Mexborough. See our plastics and metals page.
Logistics parks by the M18
Mezzanines, pick platforms, conveyor walkways and dock canopies go into the big distribution sheds on iPort, Balby Carr and the Airport Business Park. See our industrial sector page.
Frames for new units off the A1(M)
Portal frames for business and industrial units go up on open development plots near the motorway junctions. See our construction sector page.
Rail yards and workshops
Workshop extensions, walkways and equipment steel are erected at the rail yards and maintenance sheds around the town, inside possessions or agreed windows. See our rail sector page.
Energy and waste sites around the borough
Transformer platforms, equipment frames and support steel go in at substations and recycling plants within the operator’s outage window. See our power and renewables and waste and recycling pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Doncaster
The method for a Doncaster frame is settled around these:
- Deliveries on a working park. Steel wagons share the yard with trailers coming and going at every shift change. Loads arrive in erection order in slots booked with the site team, and the lay-down area is marked out clear of the dock doors.
- Wind across open plots. Plots by the motorways are exposed on every side, and light members and large panels are held back when gusts at height are too strong for a controlled lift.
- Fresh plots and old valley ground. A new plot can have a good access road and still be soft where the crane has to stand, and the valley works sit on fill left by older industry, so mats are sized for each position.
- Guys and braces overnight. Any part of the frame still waiting for its permanent bracing when the gang leaves is held with temporary braces or guys.
- Reach settled before loads are planned. The appointed person decides where the crane stands and which members it places from each spot, and the fabricator plans its loads from that.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Steel for a building that stays in use is bolted to its existing frame once we have surveyed it. Mezzanines and platforms without crane access go up with jacks and a gantry or the electric pick and carry crane, and with no fumes from it, sortation in an iPort shed carries on beside the gang.
Existing frames come apart in a sequence that protects whatever stays up, each member slung before its connections are undone. Anything going back up gets a match-mark and a line on the erection drawing, so the frame can follow a tenant from Balby Carr to its next shed.

Why Synergy
Why Doncaster firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Steel for iPort and Balby Carr sheds. Distribution operators and their contractors at iPort and Balby Carr get portal frames, mezzanine floors and dock canopies from us.
- Extra bays for valley works. Older manufacturing buildings along the valley get new bays and lean-tos tied into their frames.
- One sequence from lift plan to bolt-up. Our appointed person places the crane, and the operatives who rig each lift go on to bolt, line and level the steel.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Doncaster steel work can be joined by:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
To begin we need drawings, a steel schedule, where the site is and your programme.
-
A site check covers where the crane goes, the ground beneath it, access for deliveries, space to lay steel down and anything overhead.
-
A lift plan is then drawn up by our appointed person, and the method statement and risk assessment describe temporary stability for each stage.
-
Once your fabricator and we have fixed the delivery order, the loads leave their yard in erection sequence.
-
Our gang erects, braces, lines and levels, and the frame is ready for the sheeting, which we can put on under the same order if you want one firm for the shed.
FAQs
Common questions
Our plot at the Airport Business Park has only just been levelled. Will it take the crane?
Fresh fill can look firm and still be soft under an outrigger. We ask for the ground report or the working platform design, check each crane position against it and size the mats to suit. Where the slab or hardstanding is already in, the crane can often stand on that.
Our new unit off the M18 has a separate cladding contractor. Can you hand the frame over bay by bay?
Yes. We agree the handover order with the cladder at the start, so each bay is braced, lined and levelled before their team moves onto it. Cladding and roofing can also come from us on the same order.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
