Overview

Steel erection in York and across North Yorkshire

Trade and retail businesses at Clifton Moor, Monks Cross and Layerthorpe add mezzanines, canopies and extensions, and new housing and commercial schemes off the outer ring road need frames put up. Food and agricultural processors across the county add platforms and support steel, while inside the walls smaller steel goes into older buildings from a single crane position, or with no crane at all.

The steel itself is mostly mezzanines, canopies and extensions, with bigger commercial frames going up on the new schemes off the outer ring road. We cover York, Haxby, Poppleton and Fulford, and further out Tadcaster, Selby, Malton, Thirsk and Harrogate. A Clifton Moor canopy can usually be quoted from drawings and photographs within the working day.

What steel erection covers

Your fabricator’s steel is erected, bolted, lined and levelled, and the same gang fits the bracing, secondary steel and any light gauge framing. Old steel can come down for reconfiguration or reuse.

    Sectors

Where we work in and around York

York steel work divides between the ring road estates and everywhere else.

Trade units at Clifton Moor and Monks Cross

Mezzanine floors, canopies over trade counters and small extensions go up on retail and trade units beside the ring road. See our industrial sector page.

    New schemes off the A1237

Portal frames, commercial frames and light gauge walling are erected on housing and commercial developments at the edge of the city, where a crane can stand close to the frame. See our construction sector page.

    Processing plants in the county

New lines in food, drink and agricultural processing buildings need access platforms and support steel, put up during the shutdown by a gang working under the site’s clean-area rules. See our food and beverages page.

Walkways and frames for the railway

Equipment frames, walkways and platform steel go up at rail sites along the East Coast Main Line, inside possessions that set the working hours. See our rail sector page.

    Campus and hospital buildings

Plant decks and link steel are added to university, school and hospital buildings, booked into holiday periods where the programme allows. See our education and healthcare and pharma pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in York

Inside the walls or out on the ring road, the plan for York steel covers:

    • The lift plan comes first. Crane positions and reach are fixed from the drawings before the steel is ordered, which lets the fabricator plan each wagon around the erection sequence.
    • Loads that fit through the bars. Inside the walls, the gateways limit wagon height and width, and a lot of streets are one-way or closed to traffic by day. Steel for those sites comes on smaller vehicles, early in the morning, in erection order.
    • City of York Council for road space. Street space inside the city boundary is licensed by City of York Council, and beyond it by North Yorkshire Council. We make the application either way and provide the traffic management and road closure.
    • Soft ground by the Ouse and the Foss. Plots near the rivers can sit behind flood banks or on soft, made-up ground, so outrigger positions are checked and mats sized to suit.
    • Part-frames braced before each stop. At every pause, tea break or end of day, what stands must hold itself up, so temporary braces or guys stay until the permanent bracing catches up.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

At a Layerthorpe workshop that stays open, we survey the existing frame before any new steel is tied to it. Internal platforms that no crane can reach are jacked up, lifted on a gantry or placed with the electric pick and carry crane, which gives off no fumes, so the staff carry on at their benches.

Dismantling is sequenced so the structure left behind stays stable as each member comes free. Steel due for reuse is match-marked before it is unbolted, and the wagons are loaded so the first members to go back up come off first.

    Why Synergy

Why York firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Mezzanines and canopies at Clifton Moor. Trade and retail firms at Clifton Moor, Monks Cross and Layerthorpe get mezzanines, canopies and extensions from us.
    • Platforms for processors. Food and agricultural businesses across North Yorkshire have support steel put up inside their shutdowns.
    • The lifting crew is the erection crew. Operatives slinging each member stay with it until it is bolted, lined and levelled, working to the crane positions in our lift plan.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. It starts with your drawings, steel schedule, site address and target dates.

    2. We then look at the site itself: where a crane can stand, what the ground will bear, how wagons get in, where steel can be put down and what runs overhead.

    3. Paperwork follows: a lift plan signed off by the appointed person, a method statement, and a risk assessment that deals with stability at every stage.

    4. With your fabricator we fix the delivery order, matched to the sequence of erection.

    5. The frame goes up, is braced, lined and levelled, and passes to whoever follows us on site.

    FAQs

    Common questions

The erection area is fenced off, and steel comes in through the loading door outside opening hours. Stock is moved back from the columns, and the floor goes in bay by bay while the rest of the unit trades.

Members arrive drilled and ready to bolt, so nothing is cut or ground in the production areas. The gang wears the site’s clothing, follows its hygiene and tool control rules, and plans backwards from the restart date.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
