Overview

Steel erection in Lincoln and across Lincolnshire

Lincoln steel work differs uphill and down. Around Bailgate it means canopies, infill frames and alterations on steep, listed streets. Below the hill and out along the bypass, the estates have space for new units, warehouse mezzanines and extensions. County growers and processors add stores and packhouse bays.

Below the hill we erect portal frames and mezzanines for the estates, and we have the cranes for bigger buildings, such as a potato store with a grading hall and packhouse offices under one roof. We work from North Hykeham and Bracebridge Heath to Nettleham, and out to Newark-on-Trent, Sleaford, Gainsborough and Market Rasen. A new unit off the bypass is priced from drawings and a few photographs, often on the day they reach us.

What steel erection covers

Steel from your fabricator is erected, bolted up, lined and levelled by our gangs, who also fit the bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS framing. We dismantle existing frames too, including stores a grower wants moved to another farm. When a grower wants the store clad as well, that goes to us with the frame.

Where we work in and around Lincoln

We erect steel on these kinds of Lincoln site.

    Crop stores for county growers

Portal frame crop stores, packhouse extensions and platforms for grading lines go up for growers and processors around the county, timed around the season. See our food and beverages page.

    Canopies and infill uphill

Canopies, small frames and alteration steel go up on commercial and residential buildings in the conservation area, with the fabric around them protected. See our construction sector page.

    Distribution parks towards Newark

Mezzanine floors, new bays and canopies over loading docks are added to warehouses along the A46 and near the A1 while they keep trading. See our industrial sector page.

Trade and workshop units south of the city

Workshops at North Hykeham and Doddington gain extensions, portal frame units and machine platforms, tied in where the existing building stays in use.

    Solar, substation and water sites

Equipment frames and access platforms go in at renewable, grid and water treatment sites during fixed outage windows. See our power and renewables page.

Teaching and healthcare buildings that stay open

Plant decks, link steel and small extensions are put up on hospital, school and college sites during holidays or around the routes the estates team keeps clear. See our education and healthcare and pharma pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Lincoln

We settle five things before a Lincoln frame gets a start date:

    • The A1 and the A46. Steel trailers reach Lincoln on those roads or the A15 and A57, so we time them on the route, have them loaded in erection order and book slots that let members come straight off the bed.
    • Slopes uphill, soft ground outside. On the steep streets uphill, gradient affects levelling and what the crane can lift at radius. Farm sites add field gates and soft ground. Bearing is checked at each outrigger and mats go down to spread the load.
    • Crane reach worked out from the drawings. The lift plan is drawn up before the steel is ordered, so the fabricator knows which members each crane position has to place.
    • Road space through the county council. Where the crane or a trailer needs part of the road or footway, we apply to Lincolnshire County Council and provide the traffic management and road closure.
    • Braced before the gang leaves. Each break in the work leaves a stable part-frame, with temporary bracing or guys wherever the permanent bracing follows later.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

Steel added to a building that stays in use starts with our survey of the existing frame and its connections. A mezzanine inside a warehouse off the bypass is out of a crane’s reach once the roof and racking are in, so its members come through the loading door and are raised from the warehouse floor.

Dismantling is sequenced around the steel that remains, with each member released only when the rest can stand without it. Anything planned for re-erection is match-marked, so a store or mezzanine can go back up elsewhere.

    Why Synergy

Why Lincoln firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Farm and packhouse steel. Crop stores and packhouse bays go up for county farms when the harvest and packing calendar leaves room.
    • One gang lifts and fixes. Our appointed person sets the crane positions, and the operatives who hook on each member stay with it until it is bolted, so the lift plan and the erection agree.
    • Warehouse floors on the bypass parks. Distribution operators get mezzanines and extra bays added to sheds that keep working.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. You send drawings, the steel schedule, the site’s location and the weeks set aside for steel.

    2. One of our planners walks the site for crane standings, ground, trailer access, lay-down and wires or cables overhead.

    3. Our appointed person turns that into a lift plan, backed by a method statement and risk assessment showing how the frame is kept stable through each stage.

    4. The order of loads is agreed between us and your fabricator.

    5. Once the frame is erected, braced, lined and levelled, the next trade can start on it.

    FAQs

    Common questions

Yes, once a level standing is found or built. We survey the gradient at each possible position, set the crane up level on packing and mats, and size the machine for the radius it will work at from there.

We do, with your fabricator. Once the lift plan is fixed we send them the erection sequence, and they load each trailer so the first member off is the first one up.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
