Overview
Steel erection in Grimsby and across North East Lincolnshire
Steel in Grimsby goes up for the food processors and cold stores behind the seafood trade, and for engineering and distribution firms on Europarc, Pyewipe and Great Coates. Businesses on the dock estates and the offshore wind service companies take sheds, stores and workshops.
Most jobs are portal frames, mezzanines and platform steel. A new cold store on Europarc can be one long frame, bay after bay, and we supply the cranes to erect that too. We work in Grimsby and Cleethorpes, along the bank to Immingham and Ulceby, and inland to Laceby. Email drawings and photographs of a plain portal frame and a price normally follows the same working day.
What steel erection covers
The steel comes from your fabricator. Our gang stands the columns and rafters, bolts them up, lines and levels the frame, then fits the bracing, purlins, rails and any LFS or SFS walling. Existing frames can come down for reuse or a new layout too, and we can add cladding, roofing or machinery installation to the order.
What we do
What we erect in Grimsby
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Cold store and processing hall extensions | Food estates in Grimsby and Great Coates | The tie-in to the old frame, made with the chilled rooms kept sealed |
| Portal frame units and stores | New plots on Europarc and Pyewipe | Where the crane stands for each run of bays, and when the gable goes up |
| Plant support steel and access platforms | Factories and process buildings across the borough | Planned stops in production and live services beside each member |
| Canopies over loading bays | Warehouses and cold stores near the docks | Lorries still loading underneath |
| Mezzanines and storage floors | Wind servicing warehouses and engineering units | The slab under each baseplate and the way in for members |
| Frames dismantled for reuse | Units being cleared or reorganised | Temporary props where a member has to come out early, and match-marking |
The full scope is on our steel erection and dismantling page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Grimsby
Food producers and the dock estates bring us most Grimsby enquiries.
Chilled and frozen food sites
New processing halls, cold store extensions and mezzanine plant floors go up for food producers across the town, with members brought in clear of the hygiene areas. See our food and beverages page.
Dock estate sheds and canopies
Storage sheds, loading canopies and access steel are erected on the port estates, inside the security and escort rules those estates set. See our maritime sector page.
Engineering units west of the docks
Engineering, fabrication and distribution firms on Europarc, Pyewipe and Great Coates add portal frame units and extensions, on plots with space to lay the steel out. See our industrial sector page.
Access steel in working factories
Walkways, access platforms and plant support frames go into factories across the borough during planned production stops.
Stores and workshops for offshore wind
Warehouses, workshop extensions and mezzanine stores go up for the firms servicing the wind farms offshore. See our power and renewables page.
Schools and public buildings
Schools and council buildings across North East Lincolnshire add plant decks, canopies and small extensions, with school work timed for the holidays. See our education page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Grimsby
Our planning for a Grimsby frame turns on five things:
- Humber bank gusts. Nothing breaks the wind across the open bank, and a sheeted panel or long purlin gets too lively to land well before the crane is near its chart limit. Panel lifts go on the calmer days.
- Reclaimed land under the outriggers. Much of the ground near the water is made up, so bearing is confirmed at every crane position and the mats are sized to suit.
- Sequence set before the steel is cut. Our appointed person writes the lift plan while the steel is still being detailed, so it shapes how the fabricator batches and delivers it.
- A self-supporting frame at each pause. At every stop the steel already up stands on its own, on permanent bracing where it is in and temporary braces or guys elsewhere.
- Highway space and permits. Where a crane or trailer needs part of a public road, we apply to North East Lincolnshire Council, or, for Killingholme and Ulceby, to North Lincolnshire Council, and supply the traffic management and road closure.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Cold stores and processing halls in Grimsby rarely shut for building work, so a new bay or plant floor goes in with production carrying on next door. First we survey the frame the new steel will connect to. Where no crane can get at the work, members are walked in through a loading door and lifted on gantries, jacks or the electric pick and carry crane, whose battery drive keeps exhaust out of a food area.
Taking a frame apart is planned in the same detail. We work out which members hold the others up and leave those until last, and on steel heading to another unit each piece gets a match-mark before a bolt is undone.

Why Synergy
Why Grimsby firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Extensions for chilled and frozen producers. New bays and plant floors for Grimsby food firms are programmed around their shifts, with the steel brought in on a route their hygiene team agrees.
- Workshops for the wind servicing firms. Stores, workshop extensions and mezzanine floors are built for the companies that keep the offshore fleet running.
- Slung and bolted by the same crew. The operatives rigging each piece also bolt it up, working to a lift plan written by our own appointed person.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Alongside the steel, a Grimsby project can use:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
It begins when your drawings, steel schedule, address and programme come in.
-
We visit to mark where the crane will stand and look at the ground, the delivery route, the lay-down area and any overhead lines.
-
That visit feeds the lift plan. A method statement and risk assessment follow, showing how the part-built frame is kept stable.
-
We agree with your fabricator the order in which the steel leaves their yard.
-
With the frame erected, braced, lined and levelled, the site passes to the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our extension joins a cold store that stays running. How does the steel go up?
The new frame is erected up to the existing wall from outside, and the final connection is timed with you so the rooms stay at temperature. Send drawings of the existing building with the new steel details.
Our Europarc unit needs a new bay and a mezzanine inside. Can both be one job?
Yes. The bay goes up from outside with a mobile crane and the mezzanine is built inside, on one lift plan, so your fabricator can send the steel for both together.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
