Access and planning for lifts in Hull

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Hull jobs:

• Getting there. The M62 becomes the A63 and runs straight into the docks, with the A1079 north to York and the A15 over the Humber Bridge. The A63 dock approach is the pinch point, so timing matters as much as the route and we plan both before we quote.
• Wind off the estuary. The Humber is open and exposed, and wind stops more lifts here than anything else. We plan around the crane’s wind limits and the shape of the load, and agree in advance what happens if the forecast turns.
• Tide and quayside work. Lifts over or beside water bring tidal windows, rescue provision and edge protection, all of which go into the lift plan.
• Ground conditions. The city and the dock estate sit on low-lying reclaimed and made ground, much of it below the level of the high tide. We confirm ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Hull City Council or East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of the job.

Common questions

What happens if the wind stops the lift?

We plan for it. Wind limits come from the crane’s chart and the shape of the load, and on exposed estuary sites we agree in advance what happens if the forecast turns, so the decision is made before the crane is on hire rather than on the day.

Can you work inside the dock estate?

Yes. Port sites mean inductions, permits and vehicle rules, and lifts planned around vessel and cargo movements. Tell us the berth or terminal and what the site requires and we’ll build it into the lift plan.

Can you swap production plant inside a weekend shutdown?

Often, yes, and that is how most of the food and process work gets done here. Give us the shutdown window, the plant weights and the route in and out, and we’ll plan the crane and the machine moving side together.
