Overview
Steel erection in Nottingham and across Nottinghamshire
Engineering and food businesses moving onto the Colwick, Blenheim and Lenton estates need frames put up, and hospitals and universities add plant steel or an extra floor inside buildings that stay open. Along the tram routes, the overhead line fixes where a crane can stand.
On the estates it is portal frames, mezzanines and canopies, and a food business moving onto Colwick may want a whole production hall framed. We work from Beeston and Clifton up to Arnold and Hucknall, and further out at Long Eaton, Mansfield and Newark-on-Trent. Send drawings and a few site photographs for an estate unit and the price usually reaches you the same working day.
What steel erection covers
We erect steel made by your fabricator: the frame, bolting up, lining and levelling, bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS framing. Existing frames can be taken down too, when a Lenton unit is being refitted. Cladding, roofing and machinery installation are available in the same package.
What we do
What we erect in Nottingham
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Portal frame units and workshops | New plots on the Colwick, Blenheim and Lenton estates | The number of crane set-ups, and which bay is braced first |
| Mezzanines and storage floors | Food and trade units that keep working | The door the members come through and the slab under each column |
| Plant support steel and access platforms | Hospital and university roof decks, laboratory and process buildings | Live pipework and ducts around each new member |
| Extensions and added bays | Against a factory, laboratory or teaching building | Connection details on the existing frame, checked on site |
| Canopies and light gauge framing | City-centre schemes and loading bays | Reach from one crane position |
| Frames taken down for reuse | Units being reconfigured or emptied | What stays standing as each member is released, and match-marking |
Each stage is set out on our steel erection and dismantling service page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Nottingham
Nottingham steel comes from new build and from buildings that stay open.
Fresh plots at Colwick, Blenheim and Lenton
Portal frame units, workshops and extensions go up for engineering and trade businesses once the holding-down bolts are in. See our industrial sector page.
Plant decks on healthcare buildings
Chiller and air handling support steel and access walkways go in on hospital buildings, with the wards running and hours set by the estates team. See our healthcare and pharma page.
Life science firms around Beeston
Extensions and internal platforms are added to life science buildings around Beeston, with each member brought in on a route clear of the clean areas. See our healthcare and pharma page.
Mezzanines and platforms for universities and colleges
Universities and colleges across the city add mezzanines and plant platforms, with the steel going up in the vacation. See our education sector page.
Frames and canopies in the centre
Frames, canopies and infill framing for student, residential and commercial schemes go up on central plots and around the Lace Market. See our construction sector page.
Substations, rail and water sites
Platforms and equipment frames go in at substations, rail sites and water treatment works across the county, inside outage and possession windows. See our power and renewables and rail sector pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Nottingham
On a Nottingham frame, these shape the method before the first column goes up:
- Ground by the Trent. Low-lying plots at Colwick and elsewhere beside the river can be made ground or soft, so mats are sized to the outrigger load at each crane position.
- Wagons loaded to the sequence. Members come off the trailer in the order they are erected. On a tight Lenton yard with nowhere to set steel down, each delivery slot is booked around the crane.
- Bracing at every stop. Every break in the work leaves a stable part-frame, with temporary bracing or guys designed in where the permanent bracing follows later.
- Wind on panels and light members. A large LFS panel or a slender purlin can become unsafe to lift in a breeze the crane itself would handle easily, so the day’s lifts are checked against the forecast.
- Closures near the tram. Where a crane or wagon needs part of the road, we apply to Nottingham City Council, or to Nottinghamshire County Council outside the city boundary, and provide the traffic management and road closure. On streets the tram uses, including its routes to Hucknall, Clifton and Toton, the overhead line clearance or an isolation is agreed first.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Plenty of Nottingham steel goes into buildings that carry on working, such as a trade unit in Bulwell. Before new steel bolts onto old, we survey the existing frame. A Bulwell unit rarely has a yard a crane could use, so members come in through the loading door and are lifted inside.
Steel also comes down. Frames being reconfigured or moved are taken apart in a sequence that keeps the rest stable as each member is released, and members due to go back up are match-marked first.

Why Synergy
Why Nottingham firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Frames for the estate businesses. Engineering, food and trade firms on the estates around the city get portal frames, extensions and mezzanine floors from us.
- Lift plan and erection from one team. The appointed person planning the lifts works with the operatives bolting up, so crane positions and the erection sequence agree.
- Steel kept for your next unit. A mezzanine or small frame leaving a Nottingham unit comes down match-marked, so it can be put back up at the new address.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

More than steel erection

Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Start us off with the drawings, the steel schedule, where the site is and when the frame needs to be up.
-
A visit to the plot shows crane positions, ground, wagon access, lay-down and any overhead cables.
-
Next come the lift plan from our appointed person and a method statement and risk assessment that cover temporary stability.
-
The delivery order is agreed with your fabricator, so each wagon is loaded in the order we erect.
-
The gang stands, braces, lines and levels the frame, then hands over to the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new unit at Colwick is on low ground near the Trent. Will that affect the crane?
It changes the set-up. We check what the ground carries at each crane position and size the mats to spread the load. Send any ground report with the drawings.
Our steel goes into a university building over the summer. Will it fit the vacation?
We plan back from the date the building reopens, with the lift plan and delivery order settled before term ends. At quote stage you hear whether the window is long enough.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
