Access and planning for a machine move in Birmingham

Getting loads in and out. The M6, M5 and M42 ring the city, and the A38(M) and the A4540 Middleway carry traffic into the centre. We check low bridges and weight limits before we price the job.
The Clean Air Zone. Every vehicle entering the charging zone in the centre has to be compliant, so trucks, cranes and support vans are confirmed before the date.
Floors and ground. Cellars, culverts and canal structures sit under parts of the centre, and older estates are built on made ground. We confirm what a slab or yard will carry before setting a skate route or crane position.
Shutdowns and shifts. A weekend shutdown loses time at each end to setting up and clearing away. We allow for that when we decide which machines go first.

Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. Heavy loads leaving Birmingham join the M6, M5 or M42, with the A38(M) linking the centre to the M6.

Common questions

Can you move a press while the rest of the factory keeps running?

Yes. The press is jacked onto skates and taken along a measured, cleared route while production carries on elsewhere. If it is leaving site, a gantry or crane loads it in the yard.

Does the Clean Air Zone affect a machine move into central Birmingham?

It affects the vehicles. Every truck, crane and van entering the zone is checked for compliance when we plan the route, so nothing is held up on the day.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?

Yes. Breakdown work is prioritised because production has usually stopped. Call us with the machine details and we will give you a firm attendance time on the call.
