Overview
Steel erection in Peterborough and across the Fens
Peterborough steel comes from the trades along the A1 and the East Coast Main Line: distribution sheds needing extra bays and mezzanines, rail and utility sites adding equipment steel, and Fen processors wanting new stores. Outside the city, much of that steel stands on peat or made ground.
Most frames we put up here are portal sheds, mezzanines, extensions, canopies, light gauge walling or plant support steel, and we supply the cranes for larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames. Work comes from Orton, Hampton and Werrington, and from Whittlesey, March, Wisbech and Stamford. With drawings and photographs in hand, we can price a straightforward portal frame the same working day.
What steel erection covers
Our gangs erect the steel your fabricator supplies, then bolt up, line and level the frame and fit its bracing and secondary members. Light gauge LFS and SFS framing sits in the same package, as does dismantling existing steel for reconfiguration or reuse. A Fen grower adding a store may want it clad and roofed, and we can take that on with the frame.
What we do
What we erect in Peterborough
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Portal frame packhouses and crop stores | Farm and processing sites out on the Fens | The bays one crane set-up covers, and bracing the first of them |
| Warehouse extensions | Distribution parks on the A1 and A47 corridor | Tying into the old frame while the dock doors stay in use |
| Equipment support steel and walkways | Generation, water and recycling sites | Outage dates and live plant around each new member |
| Mezzanines and machine platforms | Engineering units at Fengate and the city’s estates | Door width, clear height and the slab |
| Light gauge walling and canopies | Housing and commercial schemes at Hampton and in the centre | What a single crane position can reach |
| Frames taken apart for reuse | Buildings being reorganised or cleared | Supporting the rest of the frame as members are released |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page explains each stage.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Peterborough
Peterborough steel work falls into six settings.
Extra bays for the trunk road sheds
Bays, dock canopies and mezzanine floors are added to warehouses on the parks off the A1 and the A47 while they keep trading. See our industrial sector page.
Produce stores out on the Fens
Portal frame stores, packhouse extensions and platforms for grading and handling lines go up for growers and processors around Whittlesey, March and Wisbech. See our food and beverages page.
Workshop bays at Fengate
New bays, machine platforms and mezzanine offices are built for manufacturers on the Fengate estate and the city’s other employment areas. See our plastics and metals page.
Generation, water and recycling sites
Access walkways and support steel for new equipment go in at power, water and recycling sites around the city during the outages their operators set. See our power and renewables and waste and recycling pages.
Railway canopies and equipment frames
Canopies, equipment frames and small buildings beside the main line are put up inside possessions with fixed start and finish times. See our rail sector page.
New buildings at Hampton and the city edge
Frames and light gauge walling go up for housing, retail and commercial schemes in the southern townships. See our construction sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Peterborough
Our planning for a Peterborough frame covers five points:
- Peat, made ground and dykes. Fen soils look firmer than they are, and drains run beside many access tracks. Bearing is confirmed at each outrigger and the mats sized to it, and on the softest plots the ground also limits which crane can come.
- Open ground and wind. Flat Fen sites give little shelter, so large LFS panels and light rafters are lifted only when the gusts measured on site suit the load and its rigging.
- Road space in city or county. Inside the city we apply to Peterborough City Council, and elsewhere to Cambridgeshire or Lincolnshire County Council, or North Northamptonshire Council around Oundle, and we set out the traffic management and road closure the crane or trailer needs.
- Each stage left standing. The sequence leaves a braced part-frame at every stop, with guys or temporary bracing designed in wherever the permanent bracing comes later.
- Trailers loaded to our sequence. Your fabricator packs each trailer in erection order, so a site with little hard standing can take steel straight from the bed.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
When new steel ties into a building that keeps working, we survey the existing frame first and check the connections the new members will use. Mezzanines and platforms that no crane can reach, such as a floor over a packhouse grading line, are raised from inside on gantries and jacks or with the electric pick and carry crane, which produces no fumes near food.
For steel coming down, the order is worked out member by member so the frame left behind stays braced, and each piece bound for another site carries its match-mark before the bolts come out.

Why Synergy
Why Peterborough firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Stores and packhouses for Fen growers. Processors and growers get portal frame stores and packhouse bays erected around the dates their season allows.
- Planning and erecting kept together. Crane positions come from our appointed person, and the riggers who land each member also bolt it, so one sequence runs from the plan to the finished frame.
- Steel timed to outages and possessions. Rail, utility and recycling work is sequenced to finish inside the possession or outage the operator grants.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Other work we bring to Peterborough steel projects:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
We need the drawings and steel schedule, plus the address and the dates your programme holds for steel.
-
A site visit covers where the crane can stand, the ground, the trailer route, space for lay-down and any lines overhead.
-
The appointed person’s lift plan comes out of that visit, together with a method statement and risk assessment that deal with stability at each stage.
-
Your fabricator and our planner fix the sequence the loads travel in.
-
The gang raises, braces, lines and levels the steel, then passes the frame to the following trade.
FAQs
Common questions
The only way to our new store near March is over a weight-restricted bridge. Can the frame still go up?
Usually, yes. We check the bridge limit before quoting and choose a crane light enough to cross it that can still work from beside the building. Your fabricator splits the steel onto lighter trailers to match.
Our production line stops for a single planned shutdown. Can the new platform steel fit inside it?
Members are delivered, laid out and checked before the line stops, so crane time inside the shutdown goes on lifting and bolting. The lift plan shows at quote stage whether everything fits.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Along with the drawings and steel schedule, send the site postcode and your programme dates. For a farm or Fen site, a line about the lane in helps us choose the crane.
