Overview
Steel erection in Northampton and across Northamptonshire
Northampton’s steel work follows its distribution trade. Sheds at Brackmills, Swan Valley and Moulton Park add pick floors, conveyor steel and new bays as contracts change, and fresh plots along the M1 need whole frames. Food producers, precision engineers and automotive component makers across the county bring platforms, walkways and workshop extensions.
Most of it is portal frames and pick floors, and we supply the cranes to stand the whole frame of a new cross-dock shed on a plot by the M1. We work across the town, Duston and Kingsthorpe, out to Daventry and Towcester to the west and south, and to Wellingborough, Rushden and Kettering to the east. Email drawings and site photographs for a new bay on an existing shed and a price can come back the day they land.
What steel erection covers
Your fabricator makes the steel and we erect it: frame up, bolts tight, lined and levelled, with bracing and secondary members in place. LFS and SFS framing is part of the same work, and we take frames down when a shed is refitted for a new contract. Operators fitting out a shed can give us the conveyor installation as well.
What we do
What we erect in Northampton
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Pick platforms and conveyor support steel | Distribution sheds at Brackmills and Swan Valley | The racking layout and what the slab takes under each baseplate |
| Portal frame warehouses | New plots near junctions 15 and 16 of the M1 | How many bays the crane covers from each set-up |
| Walkways and process platforms | Food production halls around the county | Hygiene zones and a clean route for each member |
| Workshop extensions | Moulton Park and the older estates | The existing columns, and room to stand a crane beside them |
| Generator and plant decks | Data centres, hospital roofs and school plant areas | Where new members bear on the structure below |
| Mezzanines taken down and moved | Sheds changing tenant or layout | Keeping each deck bay supported as its beams come out, and match-marking |
The steel erection and dismantling service page covers the work stage by stage.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Northampton
These are the Northampton sites our steel goes into.
Pick floors in the big sheds
Multi-tier pick platforms, conveyor gantries and mezzanine offices go up inside warehouses at Brackmills and Swan Valley, with the shed kept shipping. See our industrial sector page.
Engineering workshops at Moulton Park
New bays and machine platforms are added for precision engineers and component makers, often with the crane working from a small yard. See our automotive sector page.
New plots by junctions 15 and 16
Portal frames for warehouses, trade units and offices go up on parks still being built out, following the groundworks programme. See our construction sector page.
Chilled and ambient food halls
Access walkways, process platforms and support steel for new equipment are fitted inside food plants to the site’s hygiene rules. See our food and beverages page.
Critical plant at data centres
Steel platforms for generators, chillers and cable routes are erected at data centres inside the windows the operator allows. See our data centre infrastructure page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Northampton
Five things decide how a Northampton frame goes up:
- The lift plan comes before the order. Our appointed person works out each crane position and what it can reach, so your fabricator knows how to load every trailer.
- Trailers on a working park. At Brackmills or Swan Valley our steel shares the yard with HGVs and shift changes, so the yard manager books our arrival slots and we mark out where the crane stands and who keeps clear of it.
- Purlins and panels in a breeze. Big LFS panels and long, light purlins swing in gusts that would not trouble a heavier load, so the supervisor checks the wind before each of those lifts.
- Hardcore and clay beside the slab. Estate roads on a new park are often finished before the plots are, so the crane may stand on hardcore or clay next to the building. Bearing is confirmed at each outrigger and mats go down to spread the load.
- West or North Northamptonshire. West Northamptonshire Council covers Northampton, Towcester and Daventry, and North Northamptonshire Council covers Wellingborough, Kettering and Corby. We apply to whichever one the site sits in and provide the traffic management and road closure.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
New steel for a building in use is designed around a survey of the frame it connects to, so the columns and connections are checked before anything is fabricated. A mezzanine deep inside a Swan Valley shed is beyond any crane, so members are wheeled in through a dock door and lifted between the racking runs.
When steel is coming out, we plan the order around what remains, releasing members only once the rest is secure. Anything destined for a new building is match-marked and listed before it leaves.

Why Synergy
Why Northampton firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Mezzanines laid out around the racking. Distribution operators get pick floors and conveyor steel set out to their racking plan and the aisles they need to keep.
- Lifts planned by the people erecting. The appointed person who writes the lift plan works with the gang that slings and bolts each member, so both follow one sequence.
- Frames for the new parks. Warehouses and trade units near the M1 junctions go up to the programme the groundworks set.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
We can add these to a Northampton steel job:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
It begins with your drawings, the steel schedule, the unit’s address and the programme.
-
A planner comes out to check crane standings, ground, how trailers get in, space to lay steel down and any overhead lines.
-
The lift plan follows, written by our appointed person, and the RAMS for the job show how the frame stays stable between stages.
-
Load order is settled with your fabricator, matching the sequence the gang erects in.
-
The frame goes up, is braced, lined and levelled, and the next trade takes it on.
FAQs
Common questions
Our Brackmills shed only stops at weekends. Can the mezzanine steel go in then?
Yes. We plan the lifts, lighting and deliveries for the hours the shed is quiet, and leave each bay braced and the aisles clear before shifts restart on Monday.
We are moving from Moulton Park to a bigger unit. Can our mezzanine come with us?
Yes, if its condition allows. We check the steel and connections, take it down match-marked, and put it back up at the new unit once your engineer has confirmed the new layout and the slab.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
