Access and planning for lifts in Peterborough
Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Peterborough jobs:
- The ground comes first. Peat and made ground across the Fens carry much less than they appear to, and drainage ditches and dykes sit alongside many access roads. We confirm ground bearing, plan the outrigger positions and use crane mats, and on soft sites that decides the machine.

Common questions
Can you set up on soft Fen ground?
Usually, with the ground checked first. Peat and made ground carry far less than they appear to, so we look at ground bearing, plan the outrigger positions and bring crane mats. If a position genuinely will not take the load we’ll say so at quote stage.
Can you work next to the main line?
Yes. Lifts near running lines need clearances and usually a possession, agreed with the rail operator before the date is fixed. Tell us how close the lift is to the line and we’ll set out what is needed.
Can you reach a rural site down narrow lanes?
Often, yes, but the route decides the machine. Weak bridges, field entrances and overhead lines all get checked, and sometimes a smaller crane set closer in beats a bigger one that cannot get there.
