Overview
Steel erection in Milton Keynes and across north Buckinghamshire
New commercial and residential schemes keep coming forward across Milton Keynes, and many need a frame on a plot hemmed in by grid roads. Distribution operators near junctions 13 and 14 want mezzanines and conveyor gantries in sheds that keep shipping, while engineering firms in Kingston, Blakelands and Wolverton add bays to units they already occupy.
In the sheds most of it is mezzanines, conveyor steel and new bays. Office and apartment schemes near the centre need frames of several storeys, lifted from the grid road beside the plot. We cover the city and out to Newport Pagnell, Olney, Buckingham, Bedford and Northampton. Send drawings and photographs of a new bay at Kingston or Blakelands and the quote can come back the same working day.
What steel erection covers
We take the steel your fabricator has made and erect it, bolt it up, plumb and level it, and add the bracing and secondary members. LFS and SFS light gauge framing is part of the work, and so is taking a mezzanine out when a shed changes tenant. An operator fitting out a shed can also give us the conveyor and sorter lifts once the steel is in.
What we do
What we erect in Milton Keynes
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Frames for new commercial buildings | New-build plots across the grid squares | Which edge of the plot the crane and the trailers can use |
| Mezzanine floors and conveyor gantries | Distribution sheds at Magna Park and along the A5 | Racking lines, sprinkler mains and a shed that keeps shipping |
| Extensions and extra bays | Engineering units at Kingston and Blakelands | The existing columns, surveyed before the new steel is detailed |
| Generator and chiller support frames | Data centres and critical facilities | A fixed window and live services beside the work |
| Equipment frames and access platforms | Substations and lineside sites near Bletchley | Outage and possession times |
| Steel dismantled for re-erection | Units being refitted or vacated | The order members come out, and match-marks for the rebuild |
The full scope is on our steel erection and dismantling service page.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Milton Keynes
Five kinds of site bring us steel in Milton Keynes.
New schemes on the grid
Frames, light gauge infill and canopies go up for residential, commercial and central redevelopment schemes, on plots where the landscaped verges of the grid roads leave little room to set up. See our construction sector page.
Sheds at Magna Park and Tongwell
Mezzanine floors, conveyor gantries and dock canopies are built inside and onto warehouses that run around the clock, with the work fitted between trailer movements.
Added bays for Kingston and Blakelands firms
Manufacturers and component makers extend their units with new bays and internal platforms, tied into frames that stay in production. See our industrial sector page.
Plant steel for the data centres
Support frames for chillers, generators and switchgear go in at data centres and critical facilities within a fixed window set by the operator. See our data centre infrastructure page.
Rail and substation steel around Bletchley
Equipment frames, cable supports and access platforms are erected beside the main line through Bletchley and Wolverton and at substations and water treatment works, inside possessions and outages. See our rail and power and renewables pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Milton Keynes
Before we give a Milton Keynes frame a start date, we work through the following:
- Part-frames held overnight. The erection sequence leaves every bay braced or guyed before the gang stops, so nothing stands free until the permanent bracing is complete.
- Kerb space from Milton Keynes City Council. A crane standing on a grid road or its verge needs the council’s permission, so we apply for it and provide the traffic management and road closure.
- Reach settled from the general arrangement. Our appointed person places the crane on the drawings and lists what it sets from each position, and the fabricator packs each load to that list.
- Redways and underpasses. The redway paths dip under the grid roads, some close to where a crane would want to stand, so every outrigger position is checked against what lies below.
- Trailers into a working yard. On a shed that keeps shipping, each steel delivery gets a booked slot and a marked route, clear of the lorries and yard shunters.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
When steel is added to a building in use, we survey the existing frame first and design the tie-in around what we find. Inside a Wolverton workshop or a shed on the eastern estates, mezzanines and platforms go in between the racking and conveyor lines, lifted by our electric pick and carry crane on the shed floor.
Steel coming down is released member by member in an order that keeps the remaining frame standing. Each piece bound for a new building is match-marked, so the gang at the far end can rebuild it in the right place.

Why Synergy
Why Milton Keynes firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Floors inside sheds that keep moving. Mezzanines and conveyor gantries go up in distribution buildings that carry on trading around the gang.
- Planners and erectors on one payroll. The appointed person who writes the lift plan and the operatives who erect to it work for us, so the crane positions and the sequence are decided together.
- Frames timed for the envelope trades. On new schemes the erection sequence is planned back from the date the cladders and roofers are due.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Other work we bring to Milton Keynes steel projects:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
It begins when the drawings and steel schedule reach us with the site address and the programme.
-
A site visit follows, covering crane standings, what the ground will carry, the delivery route, lay-down and any overhead lines.
-
Lift plan first, from our appointed person. The method statement and risk assessment come after it and say what holds the frame up at each phase.
-
The fabricator and our planner fix the loading order together.
-
On site the frame is erected, braced, lined and levelled before the next trade takes it on.
FAQs
Common questions
Our plot backs onto a grid road with little spare ground. Where does the crane stand?
Usually inside the plot, placed so it reaches the whole footprint with as few moves as possible. Where it has to stand on the road, we arrange the permission and traffic management with the council.
Can a mezzanine go into our shed while it keeps shipping?
Yes. The floor goes in by zones, with each working area fenced off and the rest of the shed trading. Members come in through a dock door and are raised on gantries or with the electric pick and carry crane.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
