Factory relocation in Cumbria, from Carlisle to Kendal

What a factory relocation covers
A relocation can take one production hall or the whole building, from CNC machine tools and presses to process skids and racking. Equipment that is not making the move can be taken for sale or disposal while we are on site. If you leave before the new building is ready, the machines wait in our storage until the bases and supplies are finished.

Light engineering firms fill the Shap Road and Mintsfeet estates on the north side of Kendal. Some moves stay in the town, while others head south-west to Ulverston or down the M6, and both buildings sit in one programme.
Access and planning for a factory move in Cumbria
Points we check on most Cumbria relocations:
- The A595 for plant leaving the coast. Plant from Whitehaven follows this single-carriageway road north to meet the A66, so tall or wide items are measured against its tighter sections at survey. Exposed coastal yards get a spare loading day in case of wind.
- A new building ready on the day. Slab, bases, power, air and a way in must be finished when the plant arrives, checked against the programme beforehand.
- Getting machines out of older works. Old mills and works in the county can hold machines bigger than any door, so cladding or a roof panel may come off for a crane to lift them clear.
- The slab at each address. Jacks and skates press down through small feet, so both floors are checked and plated where the figures need it.
- The right council for the road. Loading from the highway is arranged with Cumberland Council or Westmorland and Furness Council, and abnormal loads are notified where needed.
Keeping production going during the move
In a phased move the lines you can spare go first and are producing at the new site before the rest leaves, with heavy lifts booked for weekends or a planned shutdown. A Carlisle food firm going to a larger unit can be packing at the new address while the old one still makes the product.
If you have to hand back the old building before the new bases have cured, our storage holds the plant until they have. Anything you are not taking can be sold or scrapped during the same visits.

How a factory relocation works
- Send us both addresses, roughly how many machines there are and when production has to be running again.

Common questions
Our new unit at Gilwilly has smaller doors than our Carlisle works. Will the largest machines get in?
Every opening is measured against the asset register at survey, so you know before you commit. A large machine can go in split into sections, or through a cladding panel taken off with your landlord’s agreement.
Our Kendal works has machines on the first floor. Can they come down?
Yes. Each one is skated to a loading door or a wall opening and lowered by crane, or brought down in a goods lift if it fits. The floor route and crane position are checked at survey.
Can we keep producing while we move?
In most cases, yes, for part of the plant. We move the lines you can spare first and get them running at the new site, then bring the rest across. It means more visits, and it keeps output going while the move is under way. We tell you at survey which parts can overlap.
How are disconnection and recommissioning handled?
We agree who does what at survey and write it into the programme. It is a mix of our crew, your maintenance team and the equipment manufacturers, and everyone knows their part before the first machine moves. Recommissioning is done with your engineers or the manufacturer.
