Overview

Factory relocation in Dumfries and across Dumfries and Galloway

Timber processors, dairies and food plants, farms and the manufacturers on the estates around the town come to us when a works changes address. We run the whole relocation from one point of contact: survey and asset register, disconnection and decommissioning with your engineers and the equipment manufacturers, strip-out and dismantling, lifting the machinery out, packing, crating and transport, then offloading, reinstallation, levelling, setting to line and recommissioning.

We cover Dumfries, Heathhall, Locharbriggs, Annan, Lockerbie, Castle Douglas, Dalbeattie, Stranraer, Moffat and Sanquhar. Smaller moves are priced the same working day from a desktop survey.

What a factory relocation covers

A relocation can take a whole works or one hall of it: CNC machine tools, presses, conveyors, packing lines, process tanks and racking. Machines you are leaving behind are stripped out for sale or disposal on the same visits. Where the new building is unfinished, the plant waits in our storage until the bases are ready. Larger relocations run in phases.

What we do

Factory moves we plan in Dumfries

Type of move What sets the timetable What we handle
Moving to a bigger or newer unit The fit-out date at the new unit Both buildings surveyed, then extraction, haulage and setting to line
Bringing two sites onto one When the site that stays can take more plant One asset register, incoming machines fitted around a working floor
A closure, with working plant going to a sister site in the UK or abroad The installation slot at the receiving plant Decommissioning, crating for the journey and clearing the building
Rearranging a factory within the same building or site The gaps your production plan allows Machines skated or craned to new bays, relevelled and set to line
A single line or department moving The shutdown you can give us Stripped out in rebuild order, marked section by section
A lease end forcing a move The date the keys go back An empty unit by that date, with plant held in our store

Our factory relocation service page goes through the stages.

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Dumfries

Relocations across the region come from these industries.

    Timber mills across Galloway

Commercial forestry covers much of Galloway. When a mill takes a bigger shed, the saw line, the conveyors and the dryers come out in rebuild order and go back the same way. See our industrial sector page.

    Dairy and food manufacturing

A creamery or food plant move starts after your own wash-down. Vessels, pasteurisers, fillers and cold store equipment are sheeted and taken out through the yard side, and your hygiene team signs off the rebuild. See our food and beverages page.

Machine shops north of the town

Engineering firms and fabricators at Heathhall and Locharbriggs outgrow their units. Machine tools, presses, welding plant and racking are numbered, extracted and set on new bases. See our plastics and metals page.

    The A74(M) corridor

Lockerbie, Ecclefechan, Gretna and Annan sit on or near the motorway, so units there are a common destination for plant leaving a building further west.

    Upland power schemes

When a hill substation or control building is rebuilt, the plant inside comes out, travels down a forest or estate track and goes back on a new floor, to the scheme’s own outage date. See our power and renewables page.

    Colleges and training workshops

When a college shifts a workshop into another building, the lathes, rigs and benches cross in the order each room returns to use. See our education sector page.

    Planning

Access and planning for a factory move in Dumfries

Points we check on most Dumfries relocations:

    • Long routes on narrow roads. Away from the A74(M) and the A75 the roads across the region are single carriageway, with bridges that carry weight limits. Tall and wide items have their route settled at survey, and abnormal loads are notified where needed.
    • What the new building has ready. Bases poured and cured, power, compressed air and drainage in the right positions, and a clear way in for the largest item, each with its date on the programme.
    • How each machine leaves the old works. Door and gate widths, headroom under the beams, yard room for a crane, and whether a cladding panel can come off, recorded machine by machine.
    • Point loads from jacking and skating. Old mill and creamery floors, and yards that soften after a wet week, take a small footprint badly, so both are checked and plated where the figures call for it.
    • Standing on the road to load. Where a lorry or crane has to stand on a street in the town or a narrow country road, traffic management and closure are arranged with Dumfries and Galloway Council.

    Production

Keeping production going during the move

A phased relocation keeps orders going out. The lines you can spare travel first and are producing at the new address before the rest follows, and the heaviest lifts are booked into a weekend or a planned shutdown.

Leaving one building and opening another seldom fall on the same date, so our storage covers the gap and the plant comes out when the floor and services are finished. A Heathhall firm moving east can have its first machines running while the last are still being packed. Whatever stays behind is cleared for sale or disposal.

    Why Synergy

Why Dumfries firms choose Synergy Lifting for factory relocation

    • Every item has a place waiting. The asset register carries the position each machine takes at the new works, so a lorry pulling into the yard is unloaded straight to the marked spot.
    • The plant you keep and the plant you sell. Machines going for sale or disposal are handled on the same visits, and our store holds what the new building cannot take yet.
    • One order covers crane, rigging, haulage and refit. Our own operators and fitters do all four, so a single contractor answers for the programme.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and NPORS operators, lifts planned to BS 7121, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

    How a factory relocation works

    1. Tell us where you are leaving, where you are going, roughly how many machines and the restart date.

    2. Both buildings are surveyed and every item goes on the asset register. Smaller moves are priced the same day from a desktop survey.

    3. Your quote arrives with a programme built on the sequence of the move, plus method statements, risk assessments and lift plans.

    4. Our crew extracts each machine, packs it and takes it up the road in its planned slot.

    5. At the new works it is reinstalled, levelled, set to line and handed over for recommissioning.

    FAQs

    Common questions

Yes. We survey both buildings and put them on one programme. Moves into Ayrshire, the Scottish Borders, Cumbria and mainland Europe run the same way, with export crating for plant going abroad.

Work inside the building carries on whatever it is doing outside. Anything needing a crane or an open yard goes early in the window, and the programme carries a spare day from the start.

In most cases, yes, for part of the plant. We move the lines you can spare first and get them running at the new site, then bring the rest across. It means more visits, and it keeps output going while the move is under way. We tell you at survey which parts can overlap.

We agree who does what at survey and write it into the programme. It is a mix of our crew, your maintenance team and the equipment manufacturers, and everyone knows their part before the first machine moves. Recommissioning is done with your engineers or the manufacturer.
