Access and planning for a machine move in Cumbria

Points we check on most Cumbria jobs:

Getting loads in and out. The M6 runs up the east of the county and the A66 crosses to the coast. The A595 down the west side is narrow in places, so wide loads are checked along it before we quote.
Lanes and bridges in the National Park. Weight-limited stone bridges and single-track lanes limit the size of trailer and crane. We check the approach from photos or a visit and pick a vehicle that fits.
Floors and ground. Old mill floors, suspended plant room floors and soft ground at remote sites are checked before a skate route or crane position is set.
Shutdown dates. Food lines, process plant and water sites each stop for a set period. Setting up and clearing away come out of that time, and we plan for it.
Road closures. Where a load-out needs part of a road or footway, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Cumberland Council or Westmorland and Furness Council.

Moving large or heavy machinery by road

A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. Heavy loads leaving Cumbria join the M6 at Carlisle, Penrith or Kendal, from the coast by the A66 or A595.

Common questions

Can you get a machine to a site inside the Lake District?

Yes, once we have checked the route. Send us the postcode, photos of the approach and the machine’s weight and size. We look for weight-limited bridges and tight bends, then plan a lighter trailer or a compact crane to suit.

We are moving to a new site in Cumbria. Can you move the whole works?

Yes. We survey both buildings, label every connection and move the machines in the order the new floor needs them. Anything that arrives early goes into storage until its base has cured.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?

Yes. Breakdown work is prioritised because production has usually stopped. Call us with the machine details and we will give you a firm attendance time on the call.
