The yard at Barrow runs to its own security, induction and lifting standards, with very large covered halls and quayside working. Hydro, water and utilities

The county’s reservoirs, treatment works and small hydro schemes sit in places a lorry barely reaches. Turbine, pump and valve replacement and screen and penstock work make up most of it, and the access study usually takes longer than the lift plan.

Access and planning for lifts in Cumbria

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Cumbrian jobs:

• Getting into the county. The M6 runs up the eastern side and the A66 crosses from Scotch Corner, which is how most of our plant arrives. Both are straightforward; what follows them rarely is.
• The coast road. The A595 is the only real route down the west side, it is narrow and busy in places, and for anything oversized it needs checking rather than assuming. Sites beyond Whitehaven are planned around that road, not around the map distance.
• Weight-limited bridges and single-track lanes. Inside the National Park the stone bridges, drystone walls and passing places decide the machine. A smaller crane that can get there beats a larger one that cannot, and we would rather tell you that at quoting stage.
• Licensed site lead times. On the nuclear and defence sites the approvals, vetting and supervision arrangements run to weeks or months. We build that into the programme rather than treating it as an administrative detail.
• Weather and exposure. The coast and the fells both get wind that the valleys do not, and upland sites can lose a day to conditions that are fine in Carlisle. We agree the contingency in advance.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or footway closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Cumberland Council or Westmorland and Furness Council as part of the job.

2. We quote, usually the same working day. Complex lifts may need a site visit first.
3. For contract lifts we prepare the lift plan and RAMS. For CPA hire we advise on crane position and set-up.
4. We arrive on the agreed day and carry out the lift to BS 7121.

Common questions

Can you get a crane to a site inside the Lake District?

Usually, but the access decides which one. Send us the postcode, a photograph of the approach and the weight and we will tell you honestly what can reach it. Where a mobile crane cannot get there we will say so rather than send something that turns round at the last bridge.

How long does it take to get onto a licensed site?

Longer than the lift takes to plan. Clearance, inductions, approval of the lift plan and the site’s own supervision arrangements are the programme, so the earlier you involve us the more realistic the date will be.

Can you cover the whole of Cumbria?

Yes. We reach Cumbria over the A66, which is a better road than the map suggests. For a planned lift the travel makes no practical difference, and for multi-day work we plan the plant and the crew to stay on site rather than travel daily.
