Overview
Steel erection in Wigan and across Greater Manchester
In Wigan we erect steel for food and drink producers, for engineering and construction product firms on Martland Park and the South Lancashire Industrial Estate, and for the distribution sheds by junction 25 of the M6 and out towards Skelmersdale. Town-centre schemes in Wigan and Leigh add frames, canopies and rooftop plant steel. The M6 and M61 pass either side of the town, so cranes and trailers finish on A roads, and we plan that leg before pricing.
We erect the steel your fabricator supplies, from mezzanine floors and platforms in the food halls to the tall frames of distribution sheds near junction 25. Our gangs cover the town and Standish, Hindley, Leigh and Ashton-in-Makerfield, out to Skelmersdale. A new bay for a food producer is quoted the same working day from drawings and photographs.
What steel erection covers
Each package takes in frame erection, bolting up, lining and levelling, bracing and secondary steel, and light gauge framing in LFS or SFS. Dismantling is part of it too, for steel being reconfigured or reused. Lifts are planned by an appointed person to BS 7121 and carried out with our equipment, and we add cladding, roofing or machinery installation on request.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Wigan
Around the borough, the steel goes into these places.
Warehouses near junction 25
Mezzanine floors, racking support steel and canopies over dock doors go up in distribution buildings that keep despatching. See our construction sector page.
Food and drink production lines
Access platforms, plant decks and support steel for new process equipment are erected inside production halls, in a shutdown or a cleaning window. See our food and beverages page.
Martland Park and the South Lancashire Industrial Estate
New units, extensions and workshop bays go up for manufacturers and trade firms beside occupied headquarters and warehouses. See our industrial sector page.
Component and construction product works
Extra bays and platforms go into buildings making aeronautical and automotive components and construction products, erected around machine tools that stay put. See our aerospace and automotive sector pages.
Wigan and Leigh town centres
Frames, canopies and light gauge infill go up on regeneration and commercial plots so tight the crane works from the carriageway.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Wigan
On Wigan jobs these are settled before the first column stands:
- Bracing close behind the columns. Bracing goes in bay by bay as the frame rises. Any bay open when the gang knocks off is propped or guyed to stand overnight.
- Pit ground under the outriggers. Coal was mined under much of the borough and many plots are made ground, so each crane position gets a bearing check and mats to match.
- Trailers on the A49 and A577. Steel reaches most sites on one of these two roads, so deliveries are booked outside the peaks. Each trailer is loaded in erection order for the crane to lift from the bed where the plot has nowhere to set steel down.
- Road space through Wigan Council. If a crane or trailer needs part of a road or pavement, we apply to Wigan Council and provide the traffic management and road closure.
- Crane positions set while the steel is on the drawing board. The lift plan is written before the fabricator’s order goes in, so what the crane places from each standing decides the delivery order.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Much Wigan steel goes into buildings that stay open: a food hall adding a platform, or a shed near junction 25 taking a new mezzanine. New members bolt to an existing frame only after that frame has been surveyed. Where the crane has no reach, steel comes through a dock door and goes up with our electric pick and carry crane, which leaves no exhaust in a food area.
Dismantling is planned member by member. The order keeps the rest of the frame standing as each piece is lowered, and steel meant for another building is match-marked and listed so it goes back together in the same arrangement.

Why Synergy
Why Wigan firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Steel fitted to shifts and cleaning. We erect platforms in food production halls and mezzanines in the junction 25 sheds while those buildings keep working.
- Frame first, then the machines. When a new Martland Park unit goes up for a manufacturer, machinery installation can follow the steel on the same order.
- One team at the hook and the connection. Our operatives rig every member and then stay to bolt it, to the plan our appointed person drew up.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Wigan steel jobs also draw on:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Drawings and the steel schedule come to us first, along with the site’s address and your programme.
-
On site we check crane standings, what the ground will bear, how trailers get in, lay-down room and what runs overhead.
-
A lift plan is drawn up by our appointed person. The method statement and risk assessment follow, including the bracing that keeps the frame stable between stages.
-
Loading order is agreed with your fabricator to match the erection sequence.
-
We stand the steel, brace it and line and level it, and the trade after us takes the building over.
FAQs
Common questions
Our extension on the South Lancashire Industrial Estate sits over old mine workings. Does that change the crane set-up?
It adds a step. Before the crane is booked we check what the ground will carry at each position, then set the outriggers and mats from those figures. Send any site investigation or mining report with the drawings.
We need a mezzanine in a shed near junction 25 that keeps picking. Can it go up while the aisles are in use?
Yes. The work area is barriered off, the steel comes in through a dock door and goes up on gantries, jacks or the electric pick and carry crane while the aisles beside it stay open. Tell us the shift pattern and the noisier work is planned around it.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
