Overview

Steel erection in Warrington and across Cheshire

On Omega and the logistics parks where the M6, M56 and M62 meet, we erect shed frames that are often let before the steel arrives. Older works at Bank Quay, Latchford and Westy add bays, Birchwood Park takes internal steel for technology buildings and data halls, and chemical sites in Runcorn and Widnes need access steel. Anything heading across the Ship Canal has to use a swing bridge with its own limits, so the crossing for each crane and trailer is fixed before we quote.

Most of that is portal frames and mezzanines, and the largest are whole distribution sheds on Omega with their office blocks at the front. We work in Warrington, Birchwood, Stockton Heath, Great Sankey, Lymm, Culcheth, Runcorn and Widnes. Drawings and photographs of a straightforward portal frame are enough for a quote the same working day.

What steel erection covers

Frame erection, bolting up, lining and levelling, bracing and secondary steel all sit in the package, with LFS and SFS light gauge framing as well. So does taking down existing steel when an older works at Bank Quay changes its layout. For a let shed, the developer may want the cladding from us too, so the tenant can move in sooner.

Access platforms and pipe support steel Chemical and process sites in Runcorn and Widnes Permits, exclusion zones and the shutdown window
New bays on older buildings Canal-side works at Bank Quay, Latchford and Westy What the old frame will carry, found by survey
Plant platforms and light gauge framing Technology buildings and data halls on Birchwood Park Clean routes and live services beside each member

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Warrington

Each part of the town brings a different kind of steel.

    Omega and the motorway parks

Large portal frame sheds, dock canopies and mezzanines go up here, ahead of a tenant fit-out with a fixed date. See our construction sector page.

Data halls and technology buildings on Birchwood Park

Plant platforms, internal steel and small extensions go into data halls and office buildings with live services round them. See our data centre infrastructure page.

    Process sites across Halton

Chemical sites in Runcorn and Widnes take walkways, pipe racks and steel to carry new plant, erected under the operator’s permits and inside the shutdown window. See our chemicals sector page.

    Bank Quay, Latchford and Westy

New bays, lean-tos and platforms are added to older engineering buildings whose plant has outgrown them. See our industrial sector page.

    Town-centre schemes and public buildings

Residential and commercial schemes in the centre take frames, canopies and rooftop plant steel, and healthcare, college and school buildings add plant decks. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Warrington

These are settled for each Warrington frame before a date goes in the diary:

    • Wind on big sheds. On a big distribution frame, purlins, sheeting rails and LFS panels are light for their size and swing in a wind the crane could lift through, so the supervisor reads the wind first.
    • The right highway authority. Road space is applied for with Warrington Borough Council, or with Halton or Cheshire West and Chester where a site falls in theirs, and we provide the traffic management and road closure.
    • Canal crossings in the lift plan. The plan is written before the steel is ordered and records which swing bridge each crane and trailer uses, since weight limits and openings for shipping decide what reaches a site on the far bank.
    • Soft ground by the water. Flat land along the Mersey and the canal can be soft or filled, so bearing is checked and mats chosen for each set-up.
    • Trailers in lifting order. On a shed plot shared with groundworkers and racking installers, lay-down is marked out with the principal contractor and trailers arrive in the sequence the crane lifts.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

A new bay on a canal-side works and a plant platform in a Birchwood Park data hall both go into buildings in use. The frame the new steel ties into is surveyed first, connections included. Inside a live data hall, the platform members are carried in over floor protection and bolted up between rows of equipment that stays running.

Frames also come down to be rearranged or erected again elsewhere. The dismantling order is set around the steel that remains, so it stays stable as each member is freed, and match-marks go on every piece due to be erected again.

    Why Synergy

Why Warrington firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Ready for a tenant’s date. On Omega and the motorway parks, shed frames, canopies and mezzanines are sequenced so the fit-out trades follow on programme.
    • Steel inside a permit system. On the Halton process sites our gangs erect to the site permits and within the shutdown window the operator sets.
    • Landed and bolted by the same operatives. One gang slings each member, lands it and bolts it off, working to the lift plan written by our appointed person.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. It starts with your drawings and steel schedule, the site address and the programme.

    2. One of our team walks the site for crane standings, ground, the delivery route and lay-down, and cables or pipe bridges overhead.

    3. Our appointed person prepares the lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment set out temporary stability for every stage.

    4. The fabricator and our planner agree a delivery order that follows the erection sequence.

    5. The gang erects the steel, braces it, lines and levels it, and hands the frame to the following trade.

    FAQs

    Common questions

Yes, with the areas agreed. Mezzanine bays are handed to us in sequence, the racking installers move into bays we have finished, and the lift plan shows where the crane or the pick and carry machine works each day. Share the fit-out programme with the drawings.

Every member is match-marked and logged before it is unbolted, and the dismantling order is planned around the steel that stays standing. The same record sets the re-erection order, with any new members from your fabricator fitted in at the right point.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
