Overview
Steel erection in Preston and across Lancashire
Preston steel goes up for engineering firms on Red Scar, Roman Way and Walton Summit, for food and distribution businesses along the M6 and M65, and for aerospace and vehicle manufacturers adding platforms and bays to their halls. Cottam and Buckshaw add new development. Several large employers here run their own vetting and escorted access, so their paperwork starts alongside our lift plan.
From steel your fabricator supplies, we put up portal frames and mezzanines for the most part, and the bigger jobs are extra bays on the end of a tall production hall. We cover Preston, Fulwood and Penwortham, out to Leyland, Chorley, Longridge and Kirkham. A straightforward portal frame can be priced within the working day from drawings and photographs of the plot.
What steel erection covers
We stand the frame, bolt it up, get it plumb and level, and fit the bracing and secondary steel, plus any LFS or SFS light gauge walls in the design. We also take down frames already standing. If the new bays need sheeting, we can do that too.
What we do
What we erect in Preston
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Access platforms and plant support steel | Assembly and test halls in aerospace and vehicle manufacturing | Machines running alongside and the floor under each baseplate |
| Portal frame workshops and units | Red Scar, Roman Way and Walton Summit | Reach from each crane set-up along the building |
| Mezzanine floors | Food and cold storage buildings off the M6 and M65 | Hygiene zones and the door the steel enters by |
| Extensions and infill bays | Engineering works around Farington and Moss Side | A survey of the columns the new bay bolts to |
| Canopies and light gauge framing | New schemes at Cottam, Buckshaw and in the city centre | The order the envelope trades follow on |
| Existing steel dismantled for reuse | Buildings being reorganised on the estates | Residual stability, and match-marks on anything going back up |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page sets out how each stage runs.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Preston
Preston frames go up in these settings.
Aerospace and vehicle halls in central Lancashire
Platforms, walkways and plant support steel go up inside assembly and test halls, around jigs and machine tools that keep running and each site’s own access rules. See our aerospace and automotive sector pages.
Walton Summit, Bamber Bridge and Cuerden
Portal frame workshops, lean-tos and extra bays are built for engineering and trade businesses on the estates south of the river. See our industrial sector page.
Cold stores and food plants beside the M6 and M65
Mezzanines, refrigeration plant decks and loading bay canopies are erected in food and chilled storage buildings, to the site’s hygiene rules. See our food and beverages page.
New ground at Cottam and Buckshaw
Frames, canopies and light gauge infill go up on development plots once the groundworker hands over the bases. See our construction sector page.
Healthcare and college roofs
Support frames and access platforms for chiller and air handling unit changes are erected on healthcare and college buildings that stay open, at hours the estates team agrees. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Preston
The Preston method rests on these five points:
- Crane positions fixed at detailing stage. Our appointed person settles where the crane stands before the fabricator finishes the shop drawings, and the loads are then packed to the erection sequence. On a vetted site the plan also joins the approval pack, which has its own lead time.
- Mossland west of the city. Plots towards Kirkham and the Fylde sit on soft ground, drained peat in places, so bearing is checked and outrigger mats chosen at every set-up.
- Gusts on panels and purlins. Wind crosses the open Fylde unchecked, and a wide LFS panel or long purlin starts to spin on the hook well before the crane is troubled, so the supervisor checks the wind first.
- Road space from the county or the city. Where a crane or trailer needs part of a road or footway, we apply to Lancashire County Council or Preston City Council and set out the traffic management and road closure.
- No column left free-standing overnight. Bays are braced as they go up, and where permanent bracing comes later, temporary braces or guy wires hold the frame.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Preston steel often goes into buildings that keep working, such as a machine shop at Farington adding a platform over a running line. The existing frame is surveyed before any new member is bolted to it. The roof stays on over the line, so the members come in at floor level and are raised beside the working machines.
Existing frames come down as well, for a new layout or to go up elsewhere. Members are released in a sequence planned around what stays standing, and pieces bound for re-erection are match-marked and listed against the new drawings.

Why Synergy
Why Preston firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Platforms in the halls, frames on the estates. Our gangs fit walkways inside manufacturing halls and put up portal frames at Walton Summit and Cuerden.
- Steel set out around the machines. Platform and walkway steel inside a hall is positioned from a survey of the jigs, machine tools and floor fixings already there.
- Our operatives do both jobs. The people who sling each member also bolt it off, working to the plan our appointed person wrote.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Other work that pairs with Preston steel:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Your drawings, the steel schedule, the site address and the programme dates are the starting point.
-
We walk the plot to fix crane positions and check the ground, delivery access, lay-down space and overhead lines.
-
Our appointed person writes the lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment set out the temporary bracing for every part-built stage.
-
The wagon order is agreed with your fabricator, first column to last rafter.
-
The frame is stood and braced bay by bay, then lined and levelled for the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new unit at Cuerden needs cladding and a roof as well as the frame. Can it all go on one programme?
Yes. Cladding and roofing can be added to the steel package, so the envelope follows the frame with no second contractor to coordinate. Send the cladding specification with the drawings.
A new platform in our works south of the Ribble spans a running line. When would it go up?
While the line is stopped, at night, over a weekend or in a planned shutdown fixed before the steel is ordered. The line restarts under a platform that is complete or safely braced.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

For a Preston price, send the drawings with any steel schedule, the site postcode and the weeks the steel is due on site. On a Cottam or Buckshaw plot, name the groundworker so we can check the holding-down bolts with them.
