Overview
Steel erection in Liverpool and across Merseyside
Liverpool firms bring us steel for the manufacturing and distribution estates at Speke, Garston and Kirkby, for buildings on the dock estate, and for residential and commercial schemes in the centre and the Baltic Triangle. The work runs from canopies and mezzanines on the dock estate to new sheds of many bays at Speke. On riverside plots, the ground and the wind off the Mersey get settled before anything else.
We erect across Liverpool, Bootle, Huyton and Birkenhead, and out to Widnes, Runcorn, St Helens and Ormskirk. For a straightforward portal frame, drawings and a few photographs are enough for a same-day quote.
What steel erection covers
On a Liverpool job we erect the frame, then bolt it up, square and plumb it before the bracing, secondary steel and any LFS or SFS light gauge framing go in. We also dismantle frames for reuse or a new layout. A Kirkby manufacturer can also have us sheet the new bay and set its machines in once the steel is up.
What we do
What we erect in Liverpool
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Larger multi-bay frames | Port-side plots and the bigger estate sites | How the erection sequence runs across every bay, and the delivery slots |
| Portal frame units | Speke, Garston and the Kirkby estates | Where the crane sets up for each run of bays |
| Canopies and loading bay cover | Distribution and food units in Knowsley | Yard traffic that has to keep moving |
| Pipe racks and platforms | Process sites at Widnes and Runcorn | The permit system and neighbouring live plant |
| Light gauge framing and rooftop steel | Central and Baltic Triangle schemes | Narrow approaches and lifting hours |
| Frames brought down | Units being rebuilt or rearranged | Which members hold the rest up, and marking for re-erection |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page covers the work in detail.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Liverpool
Liverpool steel goes up in these places.
Units and canopies on the Speke and Kirkby estates
New portal frames, extensions and loading canopies go up for manufacturers, distributors and food producers on both estates. See our industrial and food and beverages pages.
Buildings on the dock estate
Warehouse frames, workshop extensions and access steel go up on the dock estate, fitted around shipping and the port’s own permit rules. See our maritime sector page.
Central schemes and the Baltic Triangle
Infill walls, plant steel on the roof and canopies go onto residential and commercial buildings on narrow central streets, with lifting hours agreed with the council and the neighbours. See our construction sector page.
Pipe racks and platforms on the upper Mersey
Access platforms, pipe bridges and equipment support steel go into chemical and process sites at Widnes and Runcorn under a permit to work. See our chemicals sector page.
Teaching and clinical buildings
Plant decks and small extensions are added to university, school and hospital buildings, with education work booked into the breaks. See our education page.
Energy sites and Irish Sea wind
Equipment frames at substations, and support steel for offshore wind suppliers, are timed to the outages the network operator books. See our power and renewables page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Liverpool
Each Liverpool frame is planned around five things:
- The frame at the end of each shift. Whatever is standing when the gang stops is braced to stay put, held by guy wires or temporary braces until the permanent bracing is fitted.
- Wind coming up the Mersey. Riverside plots catch it first, and a large LFS panel behaves like a sail. The lift plan sets a wind limit for panels and slender members, and those lifts wait whenever the gusts run over it.
- Reclaimed land and cellars. Riverside plots are often on made ground, and cellars run beneath the pavements of older central streets. Bearing is checked at each outrigger and mats sized to suit.
- Steel loaded as it is erected. Each trailer carries members in the sequence the crane will pick them, and on port sites the vehicle rules and booking times are cleared first.
- Street space from Liverpool City Council. Where the outriggers or a trailer need the street, we apply for the closure and handle the traffic management and road closure for the day.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
When steel goes into a building still in use, we survey the frame it connects to before anything is detailed. Mezzanines and platforms that no crane can reach are put up from the floor with the electric pick and carry crane, which has no exhaust and can work inside a Speke unit while the rest of it carries on.
Steel that comes down is unbolted one member at a time, with the remaining frame secure at each step. Members heading for re-erection are match-marked beforehand, and the same gang can put them back up on the new site.

Why Synergy
Why Liverpool firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Mezzanines in units that keep trading. We fit mezzanine floors into warehouses and food units around the city while picking and packing carry on nearby.
- Estate work at Speke and Kirkby. We erect units, bays and canopies for firms at Speke, Garston and Kirkby.
- The lift and the bolt-up by the same people. One crew slings, places and connects each member to the sequence our appointed person has planned.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
We can add these to Liverpool steel work:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
First we need the drawings and steel schedule, the address and when the steel is due.
-
Then a site walk: crane positions, what the ground is like, how trailers get in, space to land the steel and whether cables run overhead.
-
The lift plan comes from our appointed person. Our method statement and risk assessment go with it and cover temporary stability through the build.
-
Before the first trailer is packed, your fabricator has our erection sequence to load against.
-
On site the frame is erected, braced, lined and levelled, and handed on to the trade behind us.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new unit is on reclaimed land by the docks. What does that mean for the crane?
More care at each set-up. We check the ground reports and any buried structures, confirm bearing at every outrigger position and size mats to spread the load. Share any site investigation you have with the drawings.
Can a canopy go up over our Kirkby loading bays while wagons keep using them?
Yes, in phases. We fence off one section of the yard at a time, erect that part of the canopy and hand the bays back before moving along, with lifting timed around your busiest delivery hours.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Pass us the drawings and steel schedule, where in Liverpool the site is and your target start date. If the site is on the dock estate or a process site, say so, and we will ask for its access rules before we plan the lifts.
We also provide steel erection in Deeside, Warrington, Wigan and Preston. See all the steel erection locations.
