Access and planning for lifts in Nottingham
Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Nottingham jobs:
- Tram overhead lines. The network runs through the city centre, out to Hucknall, Clifton and Toton and across the QMC campus. Lifts near it need clearance distances, and sometimes an isolation, agreed in advance, which takes lead time.
- Getting there. Most cranes reach the city from the M1 at junctions 24 to 26, with the A52, A60, A453 and the A6514 ring road spreading traffic round it. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
- The Trent. River crossings limit which route an abnormal load can take, and low-lying ground along the Trent is often made or soft. We confirm ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
- Live campus sites. On hospital and university estates the standing position, exclusion zone and timing get agreed with the estates team before anything is booked, and out-of-hours working is often the easier route.
- Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Nottingham City Council or Nottinghamshire County Council as part of the job.

Common questions
Can you lift near the tram lines?
Yes, with the clearances agreed beforehand. Overhead lines set a minimum distance for the boom and the load, and some positions need an isolation arranging, so the earlier we know the address the better.
Can you work on a hospital site while it is open?
Yes, and that is how most of this work happens. The standing position, the exclusion zone, the route for the load and the timing get agreed with the estates team in advance, and evening or weekend working is often the easier option.
Can you get a crane into a Lace Market street?
