Overview
Steel erection in Brighton and across Sussex
Steel in Brighton and Hove goes into tight spaces: extensions behind terraced frontages, frames for student and residential schemes, and plant steel on hotel and healthcare roofs. Out at Portslade, Hollingbury and around Shoreham Harbour it is units, bays and mezzanines for manufacturing and engineering firms. Central plots climb from the seafront on narrow streets, so the crane position is fixed early.
In the city our gangs mostly put up rear extensions, light gauge walls and plant steel on roofs. The same cranes erect heavier frames as well, such as a student block of several storeys over ground-floor shops. We cover Brighton, Hove and Portslade, the coast from Worthing to Newhaven, and inland to Lewes and Haywards Heath. A portal unit at Hollingbury or Portslade can be priced that working day from drawings and photographs.
What steel erection covers
The steel arrives from your fabricator and our gang puts it up, bolted, lined, levelled and braced, with its secondary members and any LFS or SFS framing. Frames being reconfigured or reused are dismantled too. Hotel owners sometimes want the new extension clad by us as well.
What we do
What we erect in Brighton
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Rear extensions and added floors | Terraced commercial and residential buildings in the centre and Hove | What the existing walls and beams can carry |
| Frames and light gauge infill walls | Student and residential schemes across the city | The storey each bundle is landed on and the order the walls close in |
| Roof platforms for new plant | Hotels, venues and healthcare buildings | The roof structure under each new member |
| Portal frame units and extra bays | The Portslade, Hollingbury and Shoreham estates | The direction the frame runs in and where temporary bracing sits |
| Mezzanines and storage floors | Workshops and trade units on the estates | Racking and machines working either side of the new columns |
| Generator and plant support frames | Utility and standby power sites by the A23 and A27 | The outage window and live equipment close by |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Brighton
Most Brighton frames go up in one of these settings.
New steel inside older terraced buildings
Beams, new floors and rear extensions go into listed and conservation area terraces, tied into walls and floors that stay.
Student and residential blocks in the centre
Light gauge infill walls, canopies and frames go up on tight city plots once the core is in. See our construction sector page.
Roof steel for hotels and venues
New chillers and air handling units on hotel and venue roofs get their support platforms out of season or overnight. See our HVAC sector page.
Health and teaching buildings kept open
Walkways, plant steel and small extensions are added to healthcare and teaching buildings, fitted around the people using them or into a vacation. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Workshop frames north and west of the city
Engineering and trade firms at Hollingbury and Portslade take new portal frame units and mezzanines. See our industrial sector page.
Harbourside stores at Shoreham
Sheds and covered bays go up for businesses beside the harbour. See our maritime sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Brighton
On a Brighton job the method is settled around these five:
- Lifts planned while the steel is detailed. Crane positions and what each one places are fixed before the steel is ordered, so trailers are loaded to match.
- Bay suspensions and closures. A central plot needs a parking bay suspended or a street closed for the crane. The application goes to Brighton and Hove City Council, or to West or East Sussex County Council beyond the city, and we provide the traffic management and road closure.
- One bay on a slope. The city climbs from the seafront, and a slope under the outriggers changes levelling and what the crane can place at radius. On many streets one bay takes a crane, and that bay sets the sequence.
- Wind off the Channel. Light gauge panels and slender members feel sea wind first, so seafront lifts carry their own wind limit and an agreed fallback.
- Part-frames that stand unaided. Every pause leaves a part-frame that stands by itself. Permanent bracing goes in as close behind the erection as the sequence lets it, and temporary braces cover the gaps.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
In Kemptown the new steel is often for a terraced hotel or office with people still inside. The walls or frame it ties into are surveyed first. Behind a terraced frontage there is rarely room for a crane, so the steel is detailed in pieces small enough to pass through the front door.
Frames can also be taken apart when a building is reconfigured or steel is going elsewhere. Each member is held before its bolts come out, the sequence keeps the remaining steel stable, and pieces being re-erected are match-marked and stacked by their marks.

Why Synergy
Why Brighton firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Steel for occupied and listed buildings. Extensions and roof steel go into terraced, listed and working buildings, planned around the people inside.
- Steel for student and residential schemes. Frames and light gauge infill walls go up for contractors on tight central plots, in step with the envelope trades behind them.
- Planned and erected by the same people. The appointed person setting out the lifts works with the gang, and the riggers slinging each member bolt it up.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Brighton steel work can bring in these services of ours too:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Whoever runs the project sends us the drawings, the steel schedule, the site address and the programme.
-
Our planner visits to see where a crane can set up, the ground under it, the delivery route, lay-down space and overhead cables.
-
A lift plan comes from the appointed person, with a method statement and risk assessment showing temporary stability at every stage.
-
Your fabricator loads to an order agreed with us, so each trailer carries the next members to go up.
-
Columns and beams go up, bracing goes in, the frame is lined and levelled, and the trade behind us takes it over.
FAQs
Common questions
Our extension is behind a terraced building with no side access. How does the steel get in?
Over the roof from a crane in the street, or through the building in pieces the doors will pass. Weights and reach decide which. The crane position and any bay suspension are worked out at survey, along with the owner’s agreement where the jib passes over a listed frontage.
We are building a new unit at Shoreham. Can cladding go on with the steel?
Yes. We add the cladding and roofing to the order, and the sheeters follow the frame on the same programme. Send the cladding drawings with the steel ones.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Send the drawings, a list of the members and the programme dates, with the site address in Brighton, Hove or along the coast. If the steel joins an older building, a few photographs of the walls or frame it meets help.
We also provide steel erection in Portsmouth, London, Southampton and Reading. See all the steel erection locations.
