Access and planning for a factory move in Brighton

- Getting each load away. Lorries climb the A23 towards the M23 or run east and west on the A27, and both fill up through the day, so every departure has an hour and a route in the programme, with height and weight limits checked at survey.
- The new building ready on its dates. Floor, machine bases, power, compressed air and a clear way in each carry a programme date, checked before a lorry leaves.
- How each machine comes out. Shutter widths, headroom under roof steels, yard depth and whether a roof panel lifts off settle how every item leaves, and it goes on the asset register.
- What the floors and yards will carry. Jacks and skates press a heavy load through small feet, and ground near the seafront and the harbour can be made up, so standings outside are checked with the slabs indoors.

The date you give up the old building and the date the new one can take plant are rarely the same, so our storage takes equipment in between and each item comes out when its base is ready. Machines you are not keeping go for sale or disposal on the same visits.

Common questions
Our unit at Portslade loads off a ramp into the yard. Does that hold up a move?
No, it settles the method. We measure the fall, hold each machine on a winch as it comes down and pick trailers that sit level at the door. Machines cross one at a time.
We are moving a line to Newhaven and the machine builder must attend the strip-down. Can the dates suit them?
Yes. Their visit goes into the programme at survey, and that line is taken apart on a day they can attend. The rest of the floor keeps moving while you wait for them.
Can we keep producing while we move?
In most cases, yes, for part of the plant. We move the lines you can spare first and get them running at the new site, then bring the rest across. It means more visits, and it keeps output going while the move is under way. We tell you at survey which parts can overlap.
How are disconnection and recommissioning handled?
We agree who does what at survey and write it into the programme. It is a mix of our crew, your maintenance team and the equipment manufacturers, and everyone knows their part before the first machine moves. Recommissioning is done with your engineers or the manufacturer.
