Overview

Steel erection in Southampton and across Hampshire

A lot of Southampton steel is for warehouses and storage sheds used by port-linked logistics firms, on plots near the M271 and along the M27. Engineering and manufacturing firms at Nursling and Millbrook extend their units or add mezzanines, and the residential and commercial schemes along the waterfront need frames, canopies and infill walls.

Most of it is portal frames and platform steel. We supply the cranes for the bigger jobs too: long warehouses near the port and waterfront frames that climb through several floors. Our gangs cover the Waterside from Totton to Hythe, Romsey to the north west, Eastleigh, Chandler’s Ford and Winchester to the north, and Hedge End and Fareham to the east. With drawings and site photographs in hand, we can price a straightforward portal frame the same working day.

What steel erection covers

The work is erecting steel your fabricator supplies: the main frame bolted up, lined and levelled, plus bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS framing. Old steel can be taken down too, as when a Nursling unit is stripped for a new occupier.

What we do

What we erect in Southampton

Structure Where it goes up What sets the method
Warehouse frames for port logistics Distribution plots by the M271 and at Nursling Crane moves along the building and the bay braced first
Workshop extensions Engineering units at Millbrook and Totton Connections on the existing columns, surveyed first
Walkways and plant support steel Factories on the estates around Eastleigh and Hedge End Running machinery below and the dates of the stoppage
Mezzanines and office decks Trade and distribution units across the city Clear height and the route from the loading door
Canopies and LFS infill Waterfront and city-centre schemes Floor-by-floor delivery of panel bundles
Frames taken down and re-erected Units being reorganised or vacated Match-marks, and what keeps the remaining frame up

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Southampton

Southampton frames go up on plots like these.

Extensions for engineering firms west of the city

Manufacturing and engineering units at Nursling, Millbrook and over the Test in Totton take new bays, lean-tos and mezzanine floors, with production carrying on inside. See our industrial sector page.

    Warehouses serving the port

Storage sheds, loading bay canopies and warehouse frames go up for logistics and port-linked firms on distribution plots off the M271 and the A33. See our maritime sector page.

Frames on central plots by the Itchen and the Test

Housing and office schemes in the centre and along the waterfront take frames, canopies and LFS infill, sequenced around the other trades. See our construction sector page.

Walkways and plant steel in working factories

Walkways, access platforms and frames to carry new equipment go into manufacturing units on the estates around Eastleigh and Hedge End, lifted in over a planned stoppage so the floor below is clear.

New plant decks on health and university buildings

A replacement chiller or air handling unit may need a new or extended frame, erected on a building that stays open, with lifts booked into the vacation or an early start. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Southampton

Before a Southampton frame is given dates, we work through the following:

    • Southampton City Council or Hampshire. Road space inside the city comes from Southampton City Council, and on the Waterside or at Eastleigh from Hampshire County Council. We apply for it and run the traffic management and road closure.
    • Stability set out stage by stage. The method statement shows how the part-built frame stays up each time work stops, with temporary bracing or guys wherever the permanent bracing comes later.
    • Gusts across the water. Plots by Southampton Water and the Itchen are exposed, and an LFS panel or slender member catches the wind long before the crane nears its limit, so lifts are checked against the forecast each morning.
    • Made ground by the port. Plots beside the docks and along the Test and Itchen are often on reclaimed land, so ground bearing is confirmed at each crane position and mats spread the outrigger loads.
    • Sequence fixed at detailing. Our appointed person settles crane positions at the detailing stage, which tells the fabricator what goes on each trailer and in what order.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

An office deck inside a Millbrook engineering unit can go in with the machines still running on the shop floor next to it. Its frame and connections are checked before any new steel is detailed to join them. The deck sits under the roof, well away from any crane position, so its members come in through the shutter and are raised beside the machines.

Dismantling runs in an order planned around the steel that stays, keeping the frame stable while each member is unbolted and lowered. Members due to be put back up, on the same site or a new one, carry match-marks that tell the gang where each piece belongs.

    Why Synergy

Why Southampton firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Sheds and stores for port businesses. Logistics and port-linked firms bring us warehouse frames, canopies and loading bay steel.
    • Extra space on the western estates. Engineering and manufacturing firms at Nursling, Millbrook and Totton get extensions and mezzanine floors from us.
    • Planned and erected by one crew. The appointed person writing the lift plan and the erectors bolting up work together, so the sequence on paper is the one used on site.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. Email over the drawings, steel schedule, site address and programme dates.

    2. We then look at the site itself: crane standings, ground conditions, gate access for trailers, room to lay steel down, and overhead lines.

    3. A lift plan from our appointed person follows, with a method statement and risk assessment that carry the temporary stability for each stage.

    4. The load order is fixed with your fabricator to match the erection sequence.

    5. On the agreed dates the frame is erected, braced, lined and levelled, then handed over to whoever follows on the programme.

    FAQs

    Common questions

Yes. The mezzanine steel is scheduled into the same erection sequence, going in once the main frame is braced and before the roof is closed, so the crane lifts it straight in. Your fabricator can deliver both on one loading plan.

In most cases, yes. We check the ground bearing at each crane position, using any site investigation you hold, and size mats to spread the outrigger loads. Send the report with the drawings if there is one.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

We need four things to price Southampton steel: the drawings, the steel schedule, the address and your programme dates. Tell us too which road the trailers turn in from, as many plots here have one gate onto a busy road.
