The plant is released in the opposite order to the one it was installed in, which is what protects its worth. Some is re-erected elsewhere, numbered and recorded as it is released, then packed for the road. Some sells on as working machinery. Access and planning for dismantling in Brighton
Five things are fixed before cutting starts in Brighton:
- The contents, and who signs them off. The site operator or a specialist cleans, purges and certifies the plant, and the cuts are grouped into the shifts those certificates cover.
- Working at height. Most of this cutting is done on structures and roofs, so the lift plan covers working positions, edge protection, restraint on each member as it is freed, and rescue.
- Gradient, street width and listed frontages. The city climbs steeply from the seafront and central streets take one vehicle, so levelling, outrigger loads and safe capacity are set on the real slope. Lifting a section out over a Regency frontage is agreed with the building owner first, and the method sets out what protects the stonework.
- Load left in what stays. Steel and pipework share loads that no longer add up once a neighbour has gone, so the sequence is checked stage by stage and props designed in.
- Crane standing, ground bearing and the run off site. Made ground near the seafront and cellars under a central pavement decide mats and bearing pressures. Sections are sized for a route out to the A23 or A27, and a bay suspension or closure goes through Brighton and Hove City Council.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Plant with somewhere else to go is taken apart in rebuild order. Numbers go on before anything moves, each position is photographed against the layout, joints are opened at bolts and flanges, and crates are built to what the lorry takes. An air handling unit leaving a Hove roof for a sister building travels that way, and so does a machine sold on.
Once plant has no life left, what it returns depends on the sorting. Stainless is kept off the carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous fill their own containers instead of the mixed skip, and sections are cut to a size that can be weighed and sold. Most jobs hold a bit of each, so name the items you want back and they come off early, marked and listed.

Common questions
A seafront hotel stays open and the boiler is in the basement. How does it come out?
It is cut to pieces sized for the service stair or area steps, with the route covered and hours agreed with your team. Where hot work is restricted the joints come apart cold before pieces load from a suspended bay.
Can you keep our compressors and clear the rest of a Hollingbury unit?
Yes. The survey produces two lists and the sequence follows them. The compressors are freed at bolts and flanges, numbered against a layout, crated and loaded out first. The rest comes down for material, segregated as it is cut.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
