Access and planning for lifts in Brighton

Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Brighton jobs:

• Getting there. There is no motorway. Cranes come down the A23 from the M23 or along the A27, both of which are slow at the wrong time of day, so timing is part of the plan and we route around low bridges and weight limits before we quote.
• Gradient and narrow streets. The city rises steeply from the seafront. A sloping, narrow street changes levelling, outrigger loads and safe capacity at radius, and often there is only one bay where a crane will fit.
• Listed facades. Reaching over a Regency or Victorian frontage needs the owner’s agreement and a method that protects the fabric, as well as a lift plan.
• Wind off the sea. Seafront lifts are the ones most often stopped by weather, so we plan around wind limits and agree in advance what happens if the forecast turns.
• Parking suspensions and closures. Most central lifts need a bay suspension or a closure. We can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Brighton and Hove City Council or the relevant county council as part of the job.

Common questions

My street is narrow and on a hill. Can you still lift?

Usually, but it decides the machine. Send us the address and photos of the street, the frontage and the roofline, and we’ll tell you what will fit and whether a bay suspension is needed before you commit to a date.

Can you lift over a listed frontage?

Often, yes, with the building owner’s agreement and a method that protects the fabric. We work out the radius and the load path early so you know whose agreement is needed.

What happens if the wind comes up?

We plan for it. Wind limits come from the crane’s chart and the shape of the load, and on seafront work we agree in advance what happens if the forecast turns, so the decision is made before the crane is on hire.
