Overview
Steel erection in London and across the home counties
We erect structural steel in London for contractors and building owners, using steel their fabricator has made. In the central boroughs the work is mostly extensions, extra storeys and infill bays on plots with no spare ground, every piece lifted in from the street. Out on the Lea Valley and outer borough estates it is more often portal frame units, canopies and mezzanine floors.
We erect from Brent and Ealing across to Hackney and Newham, and beyond the M25 in Essex, Kent, Surrey and Hertfordshire. A portal frame unit on an outer estate can be priced the same working day once we have drawings and photographs.
What steel erection covers
The gang erects the frame, bolts it up, lines and levels it, and fits bracing and secondary steel, with light gauge LFS and SFS framing part of the same work. We also strip out existing steel, often the first job before a central building takes its extra storey.
What we do
What we erect in London
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Added storeys and rooftop extensions | Office and residential schemes on tight central plots | What the existing columns and connections will carry |
| Plant decks and roof platforms | Offices and hotels taking new chillers | Where new members bear on the existing roof |
| Light gauge LFS and SFS framing | Infill walls on concrete or steel frames | Getting bundles to each level in wall order |
| Portal frame units and canopies | Lea Valley and outer borough estates | Crane positions and when the first bay is braced |
| Mezzanines and internal platforms | Warehouses, workshops and data halls | Door sizes and headroom |
| Multi-storey frames | New build schemes | Delivery slots and the sequence level by level |
The steel erection and dismantling service page describes the work in full.

Sectors
Where we work in and around London
London steel goes up on these kinds of site.
Central plots from Clerkenwell to Canary Wharf
Frames for extensions, extra storeys and infill bays go up on schemes in the City, Southwark and around Canary Wharf, tied into structures that are staying. See our construction sector page.
Rooftops in the City and the West End
Plant decks and access platforms are erected on let offices and hotels when chillers and air handling units are replaced, with the floors below occupied. See our HVAC page.
East London industrial estates
Portal frame units, canopies over loading doors and mezzanine floors are built for manufacturers and trade firms through the Lea Valley and out to Barking. See our industrial sector page.
Data centres towards the M25
Generator platforms and plant support steel are added at data centres, sequenced into the fixed windows the operator gives. See our data centre infrastructure page.
Hospitals and universities in daily use
Link steel and small extensions are erected on hospital and university sites that never close, around the routes the estates team keeps open. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in London
A London frame gets its dates once these are settled:
- Borough licences and oversail. A crane standing on a central street needs the borough’s permission, or Transport for London’s on the red routes, plus agreement from any neighbour the jib swings over. Lead times differ a lot between boroughs, so we ask for the address first and arrange the traffic management and road closure.
- A safe frame at every break. Permanent bracing goes in close behind the erection, and a bay left open overnight is guyed or temporarily braced.
- Vaults below the pavement. Basements and vaults run under many central streets, so outrigger loads at each crane position are checked against them and spread on mats.
- Crane positions fixed early. The lift plan is drawn up before the steel is ordered, so the fabricator knows which pieces the crane places from each position and can load to suit.
- Gusts between tall buildings. Wind funnels along central streets and round towers, so large LFS panels and light members go up only once the supervisor has checked the gusts at height.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Steel going into an occupied building is tied into the existing frame, which we survey first to check the connections. In a Park Royal warehouse a mezzanine goes up with the electric pick and carry crane, and the warehouse keeps working around the gang.
Taking steel down is planned in reverse. Members come out in an order that keeps the rest standing, with props or temporary bracing wherever a release would leave the frame unsupported, and pieces due for re-erection are match-marked before they are unbolted.

Why Synergy
Why London firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Roof steel for new plant. Platforms for replacement chillers and air handling units go up on let buildings in the central boroughs.
- Units and mezzanines for east London firms. Portal frames and mezzanine floors on the Lea Valley estates go up in step with the groundworks programme.
- The lift planner and the erectors work together. Our appointed person fixes the crane positions, and the gang that slings each member also bolts it up, so plan and sequence agree.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Work we add to a London steel package:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
We start from your general arrangement drawings and steel schedule, plus the site address and programme.
-
Someone from our team walks the site: crane positions, ground, the way in for deliveries, lay-down and overhead lines.
-
The appointed person produces the lift plan, with the method statement and risk assessment built around it and temporary stability set out stage by stage.
-
Your fabricator and our team agree the order the loads leave the works.
-
Erection, bracing, lining and levelling follow, and the frame is handed over ready for the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
We are replacing chillers on an office roof. Can the new support steel go in at night?
Yes. The existing roof is checked first so the new members bear where they should, and the lifts go in the hours the building manager agrees, which in the City and the West End often means nights or a Sunday.
There is nowhere on our site to put steel down. Can the frame still go up?
Yes. Lorries are called forward one at a time as the crane is ready, carrying members in erection sequence, so the steel comes straight off the trailer. ULEZ, the Direct Vision Standard and any CLOCS or FORS conditions your principal contractor sets are checked for every vehicle before the date.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
