Overview
Steel erection in Luton and across Bedfordshire
Distribution firms around Dunstable and Houghton Regis want canopies over their loading docks and new floors inside sheds that keep running. Manufacturers and engineering firms across Luton and Dunstable add bays and workshop units, and the town-centre regeneration schemes need frames and infill walls on tight plots. South and west of the town the ground climbs towards the Chilterns, and on those plots the slope decides the crane position.
Loading dock canopies and mezzanines are the bulk of it, while two-storey office and warehouse buildings on the plots around Houghton Regis make up the heavier work. Work comes to us from across Luton and out to Harpenden, Hitchin, Stevenage, Bedford and Leighton Buzzard. Drawings and a few photographs are enough to price a dock canopy the same working day.
What steel erection covers
Our gang erects your fabricator’s steel, bolts it up, lines and levels it, and fixes bracing and secondary steel. Light gauge LFS and SFS framing sits within the same work, and old canopies and floors can come out when a shed is re-racked. We can sheet a new canopy as well.
What we do
What we erect in Luton
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Canopies over loading docks | Distribution sheds either side of the M1 near Dunstable | Trailers still using the yard while the canopy goes up |
| Portal frame workshops and units | New plots on the Luton and Dunstable estates | Where a crane can stand to reach the far gable |
| Mezzanines and pick floors | Warehouses that carry on picking | Clear height under the haunches and the door the members enter by |
| Generator decks and plant support steel | Data halls and critical sites | The operator’s window and the live cable routes below |
| Light gauge framing and infill bays | Regeneration schemes in the town centres | Kerb space for deliveries on a plot with no yard |
| Frames taken down for reuse | Units changing hands on the estates | Holding what remains as each member is freed, with match-marking |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page covers each part of the work.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Luton
Here is where Luton steel goes up.
Workshops for Luton and Dunstable manufacturers
Workshop units, extra bays and lean-to extensions are built for engineering firms and component makers beside a production floor that keeps working. See our industrial sector page.
Dock canopies and pick floors off junctions 11 and 11a
Loading canopies, mezzanine pick floors and conveyor support steel go into the sheds around Dunstable and Houghton Regis, planned around trailer movements and shift changes.
Generator decks at the data halls
Raised decks for standby generators and frames for cooling plant are erected at data centres and critical sites, inside windows the operator fixes. See our data centre infrastructure page.
School and council buildings in use
Plant platforms, link steel and small extensions go onto schools, health centres and council buildings, lifted during holidays or at hours the site agrees. See our education sector and healthcare and pharma pages.
Regeneration plots in Luton and Dunstable
Frames, light gauge infill walls and canopies go up on residential and commercial schemes in both town centres, where the plot is small and deliveries arrive from the street. See our construction sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Luton
These points go into the method for a Luton frame before a date is fixed:
- Chalk slopes to the south and west. Plots rising towards the Chilterns seldom give a level standing, so each crane position is surveyed and matted to suit the outrigger loads.
- Open ground and gusts. A canopy sheet or a long run of purlins catches the wind well below the crane’s own limit, and the supervisor checks conditions before those lifts start.
- A yard that stays busy. Steel arrives packed in erection order and goes straight from trailer to hook, so a distribution yard gives up only a short strip beside the crane.
- Council permission for the road. Where a crane or trailer needs a lane or a footway, we apply to Luton Borough Council, or to Central Bedfordshire Council for Dunstable and Houghton Regis, and set up the traffic management and road closure.
- A lift plan that sets the loading. Our appointed person fixes crane positions and a stable part-frame at each break before the fabricator books transport, so each load arrives in the order the frame goes up.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
A good share of Luton steel is added to buildings that stay open, and the existing frame is surveyed before any new member is bolted to it. A mezzanine inside a Dunstable warehouse goes in between racking runs that stay loaded, so members come through a dock door and are raised from the floor.
Taking steel down follows a sequence set out in advance, so the members left standing stay stable as each one is released. Anything due to go back up is match-marked first, ready for the new layout.

Why Synergy
Why Luton firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Canopies and pick floors in live sheds. Canopies, pick floors and conveyor steel are fitted in around the trailers and shifts of a working shed.
- Bays added to working factories. Manufacturers in Luton and Dunstable get new bays and workshop units tied in beside production that carries on.
- A single crew slings and bolts. The operatives who rig each member are the ones who bolt it home, working to a lift plan written by our own appointed person.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
A Luton steel package can draw on these services too:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Your enquiry brings the drawings, the steel schedule, the site address and your programme dates.
-
We visit to check crane standings, the ground, how deliveries get in, space to set steel down and any overhead lines.
-
Our appointed person writes the lift plan. The RAMS are drafted from it and show how each part-built bay is held up until its permanent bracing is in.
-
Your fabricator loads each delivery to the erection order we agree with them.
-
Columns and rafters go up, bracing goes in, and the frame is lined, levelled and passed to the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our plot is on a slope on the south side of Luton. Can a crane still set up?
Yes. We survey each possible crane position, check the fall and the ground, and pack or mat the outriggers level. A levels drawing or a few photographs taken from the road help at quote stage.
Can a canopy go up over our loading docks while trailers keep using them?
Yes. We split the canopy into stages, close only the doors under the bay being erected, and agree the exclusion zone and timings with your yard team so the rest of the docks stay open.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
