Overview
Steel erection in Chesterfield and across Derbyshire
Manufacturers and distributors have moved into Chesterfield for its M1 access, and they need frames for new units at Markham Vale, extensions for component makers and platforms inside life science and food buildings. A lot of the ground from Staveley round to Bolsover is former colliery land, so what it will carry is checked at each crane position before anything else.
Most of what we put up here is portal frames and mezzanines, with canopies and plant steel for the food and life science buildings. A food producer’s new chilled building with a first-floor office over the loading bay is well within what the cranes we supply can lift. The work covers Staveley, Brampton, Dronfield and Clay Cross, out to Bolsover and Mansfield, and south west to Matlock. A new unit on an estate plot at Barlborough is priced from drawings and photographs the working day they arrive.
What steel erection covers
We stand the frame your fabricator has made, bolt it up, set it true, and fit the bracing and secondary members, along with light gauge LFS and SFS framing. Frames that have to come down to be moved or rearranged are dismantled in sequence. Component makers moving presses into a new bay can put that move with the steel in one order.
What we do
What we erect in Chesterfield
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Frames for new manufacturing and distribution units | Markham Vale plots beside the M1 | Crane travel along the building and when the first bay is braced |
| Mezzanine floors added after occupation | Markham Vale units and M1 warehouses once tenants move in | The door the steel comes through and the slab under each column |
| Production hall extensions and platforms | Rail and automotive component factories | Machines running beside the work |
| Lean-to bays and loading canopies | Trade units at Foxwood, Boythorpe and Broom Business Park | Yard space for a crane and a trailer together |
| Internal platforms and plant steel | Life science and medical device buildings | Cleanliness rules and the agreed route in |
| Frames dismantled for another site | Buildings being refitted or vacated | Which members hold the rest up |
Our steel erection and dismantling service page covers the work in depth.

Sectors
Where we work in and around Chesterfield
Around Chesterfield, the steel goes up on these sites.
Plots beside junction 29a
Frames for new units go up on Markham Vale’s open plots, with mezzanine and racking steel once tenants move in. See our construction and industrial sector pages.
Extensions for component makers
Rail and automotive parts factories get new bays and internal platforms while production carries on beside the work. See our rail and automotive pages.
Trade and engineering units at Broom and Foxwood
Lean-to bays, loading canopies and mezzanine offices go onto units on Broom Business Park and at Foxwood and Boythorpe, where the yards are tight. See our industrial sector page.
Clean buildings for life science firms
Plant steel and internal platforms go into validated buildings along a route the quality team agrees. See our healthcare and pharma page.
Halls for renewable energy firms
Extra bays and canopies are added to halls where renewable energy equipment is built, sequenced around the fabrication going on inside. See our power and renewables page.
Food lines and motorway sheds
Process platforms go into food and drink plants inside planned stops, and canopies and mezzanines into the motorway sheds. See our food and beverages page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Chesterfield
Five things decide how a Chesterfield frame goes up:
- Part-frames left stable. The sequence leaves a stable part-frame each time work stops, with temporary bracing or guys designed in where the permanent bracing comes later.
- Former pit land. Staveley, Markham Vale and the land around them were mined, and some plots sit on made ground, so bearing is checked at each crane position and mats sized to the outrigger load.
- Loads in erection order. Trailers arrive packed in erection sequence, so the crane lifts straight from the bed where lay-down is short. On yards that climb towards Matlock, each trailer stands where the ground is level.
- The lift plan leads the detailing. The lift plan is written while the steel is still being detailed, so the fabricator loads to suit what the crane can place from each position.
- Closures through Derbyshire County Council. The county council is the highway authority for Chesterfield, so a crane standing on the road needs its approval, and our team sets out the traffic management and road closure.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
At a Staveley component works that stays in production, new steel waits on a survey of the frame it will join. A platform deep inside that building is out of reach for a crane parked in the yard, so it is built from the shop floor between the machines.
Dismantling runs to a planned order, so the members still in place keep the frame stable as others are released. Steel headed for a new building is match-marked before it is unbolted, so it can go back together bay for bay.

Why Synergy
Why Chesterfield firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Frames and fit-out steel at Markham Vale. We put up frames for new units there, and the mezzanine and racking steel once the tenant moves in.
- Steel for the component makers. Platforms and extensions for rail and automotive component factories are sequenced around the machines already running.
- One supervisor for rigging and bolting. The person running the lifts also runs the bolting up, so the gang follows the sequence on the lift plan.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
A Chesterfield steel package can bring in:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
It starts with your drawings and steel schedule, the site address and the date the steel is due.
-
A visit follows to check crane standings, how firm the ground is, the approach for trailers, lay-down space and what runs overhead.
-
With that, the appointed person writes a lift plan. A method statement and risk assessment go alongside, covering how the frame is held at each stage.
-
The fabricator gets our erection order and loads to match.
-
Columns, rafters and bracing go up, the frame is lined and levelled, and the site passes to whoever follows us.
FAQs
Common questions
We have a plot at Markham Vale. Can you put up the frame and then the mezzanine?
Yes. The frame goes up first, and the mezzanine follows once the slab is cast and the building is weathertight, either straight after or when your fit-out starts. Tell us which when you send the drawings.
Our component works has to keep running. Can new platform steel go in beside the machines?
Yes. The area under each lift is fenced off only while that lift is under way, and the heaviest members go in at a shift change or weekend. Send a layout with the running machines marked.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
