Access and planning for dismantling in York
Before any cutting starts on a York job, these get agreed:
- What stays standing after each cut. Plant carries loads no drawing shows, so each stage is checked for what the remaining steel holds, with temporary support where it is needed.
- What the plant held. Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification are the operator’s work or a specialist’s, and cutting follows the shift each certificate covers.
- Getting sections back out of the walled centre. Height and width at the bars cap what can leave whole, pedestrian hours close off most central streets by day, and there is seldom a second workable crane position.
- Access and rescue at height. Little of this happens at floor level, so the method statement covers platform positions, edge protection, what holds a member while it is cut, and how a casualty comes down.
- Crane standing and ground bearing. Sites along the Ouse and the Foss bring embankments, flood defences and made ground, so outrigger loads and mat sizes are settled before a position is fixed. Where load-out takes part of a road, we arrange the closure with City of York Council.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Where the plant has somewhere else to go, that decides the work from the survey onwards. Each item is match-marked and its position recorded, joints are undone at flanges and bolts where a connection allows, and parts are packed for the lorry and for storage. Machines sold on as working equipment get the same care, and inside the walls crates are sized to leave through a bar.
Plant at the end of its life is different. The value sits in separation: stainless away from carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous in containers of their own, and material reduced to lengths that load and weigh cleanly. Common questions
The site is by the river on soft ground. How is the crane planned?
Ground bearing decides it. What lies under each outrigger is checked before the position is chosen, and mats or a designed pad spread the load. Embankments and flood defences stay outside the loaded area.
Can plant be cut out inside a rail possession?
Yes. The work splits into stages that fit the booked hours, the plant is left safe at the end of each shift, and heavier lifts go into the longest possession. Send the dates and we write the sequence to them.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
