Overview

Steel erection in Leeds and across West Yorkshire

We erect structural steel in Leeds for contractors and the firms that occupy the buildings: portal frames for new units by the M1 and M62, extensions and platform steel at Holbeck, Hunslet and Cross Green, light gauge framing on city-centre schemes and mezzanines in warehouses that keep trading. Your fabricator supplies the steel, and we plan the lifts and put the frame up.

Central sites are planned around the bus gates and pedestrianised streets, while the estates towards the motorways have room to set up. We erect across Leeds and out to Otley, Horsforth, Pudsey, Morley, Garforth and Wetherby. Drawings and photographs are enough for us to quote a single-span unit on the day they arrive.

What steel erection covers

The package covers the frame, bolted and set true, with its bracing and secondary steel. We also erect light gauge framing (LFS and SFS) on the city-centre schemes, and take existing steel out of Holbeck and Hunslet buildings when their layout changes.

    Sectors

Where we work in and around Leeds

Steel enquiries in Leeds come from these kinds of site.

New bays on Holbeck and Hunslet buildings

New bays, lean-tos and support steel get added to engineering buildings that went up decades ago, some with no drawings left. The works carries on behind the sheeting while they go up. See our industrial sector page.

Portal frames at Thorpe Park and the motorway estates

Portal frames for distribution sheds and business units go up on open plots with room for a crane to track along the building. See our construction sector page.

    Framing on city-centre schemes

Tall residential and commercial buildings in the centre take light gauge infill walls, rooftop plant steel and canopies once the main frame or core is up.

Platforms in food and drink plants

Access platforms and support steel for new process equipment go into production halls across West Yorkshire. The steel goes up to the site’s hygiene rules, in a shutdown or beside a working line. See our food and beverages page.

Rooftop steel for hospitals and universities

Frames for rooftop plant, access platforms and small extensions go up on healthcare, laboratory and university buildings that stay open, lifting at times the estates team sets. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Leeds

Five points get fixed before the first trailer leaves your fabricator:

    • Trailers with nowhere to wait. Where a site has no lay-down, each trailer is packed in the order the frame goes up and the crane lifts from the bed. Around the bus gates and pedestrianised streets a trailer has few places to pull in, so arrival slots are booked to the hour.
    • Ground under the crane. Holbeck and Hunslet were built over with mills and engineering works, and old foundations and basements can sit under a crane position. We check before the outrigger pads are sized.
    • Stability at each break. Each time work stops, the part-built frame must stand up on its own. Permanent bracing goes in as early as the sequence allows, with temporary braces or guy wires where it cannot.
    • Planning lifts while the steel is still on paper. Our appointed person fixes crane positions and reach before the fabricator plans loads, so deliveries follow the erection order.
    • Closures through Leeds City Council. If the crane has to stand in the carriageway or a delivery blocks a footway, we apply to the council and set out the traffic management.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

New steel added to a building in use starts with a survey of the frame it will bolt to. In a warehouse off the M62 the racking and roof leave no way in for a crane, so a mezzanine goes up in one bay while pickers carry on in the next aisle.

Existing steel comes down in an order worked out around whatever stays standing, each member held on the crane before it is unbolted. Pieces going back up are match-marked, so each returns to its old position.

    Why Synergy

Why Leeds firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • New units and older works. We put up portal frames on the motorway estates and add bays to older buildings in Hunslet and Holbeck.
    • Cladding and roofing on the same order. On a new M62 unit the sheeting and roof can be added to the steel package, on one programme.
    • Our riggers are also our erectors. The crew lifting each member into place stays on it until the bolts are tight.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. Send the drawings and steel schedule by email, along with the site address and your programme dates.

    2. One of our lift planners visits to look at crane standings, the ground, trailer access, lay-down space and anything overhead.

    3. Our appointed person draws up the lift plan, then a method statement and risk assessment covering stability at each stage.

    4. We settle a loading sequence with your fabricator so trailers reach Leeds in erection order.

    5. Our gang puts the frame up, braces it, lines and levels it, and the next trade takes over, unless you have asked us to sheet and roof the building as well.

    FAQs

    Common questions

Any drawings you have, and access to the columns and connections the new steel will bolt to. We check their size and condition on site, and your engineer confirms the tie-in detail before fabrication.

Once the general arrangement drawings exist, before the steel is ordered. The lift plan can then shape how the trailers are loaded, and we check the holding-down bolts against the drawings early.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
