What dismantling covers

Access and planning for dismantling in Leeds

Points we settle before any cutting starts in Leeds:

What is left standing after each cut. Removing one member shifts its load onto the others, so we check every stage and put temporary steel in where the structure needs holding.
Getting sections out of the centre. Bus gates and pedestrianised streets limit where a crane stands, and the tunnelled inner ring road rules out a tall load. Section sizes follow the route out.
Crane standing and the load-out route. Made ground in Holbeck and Hunslet, vaults under the pavement and canal edges get checked before an outrigger position is fixed. Road closures go through Leeds City Council.
What the plant held. The operator or a specialist has to clean, purge and certify it gas-free before we cut. Several certificates cover one shift, so the programme follows them.
Access and rescue at height. Much of this work happens on structures and roofs, so edge protection, anchor points, how each section is held while cut and rescue all go into the method statement.

Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery

Plant going back up, at your site or a buyer’s, comes apart with that in mind from day one. Sections are match-marked and recorded as they are released, connections are broken at flanges and bolts where possible, and items are packed for the lorry and for storage. Machinery sold on gets the same handling.

Where plant has reached the end of its life the value sits in segregation. Stainless is kept from carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous go into their own containers instead of the mixed skip, and material is cut to weighable sizes. Common questions

Can a Hunslet factory keep running while a line is cut out?

Yes. We agree the exclusion zone and hot work position with your team, work inside the area handed to us, and take heavier sections at night or over a weekend.

How do large sections leave a city-centre plant room?

Pieces are cut to what the doorway or the goods lift will take, skated to where a crane can reach, then lifted onto a lorry. A standing position on a pedestrianised street usually means a Sunday or an evening.

How is dismantling different from demolition?

Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.

Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?

Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
