Overview
Steel erection in Glasgow and across the west of Scotland
Industrial estates bring the bulk of Glasgow’s steel work: new portal frame units, added bays and mezzanines at Hillington Park, Clydesmill in Cambuslang, Glasgow Business Park and New Albion at Yoker. Precision engineers want equipment platforms set out to fine tolerances. Distillers and brewers add plant floors, and Clyde-side schemes take light gauge framing.
Canopies, extensions and plant support steel come our way as well, and we supply the cranes for larger multi-bay and multi-storey frames. We work from Partick and Govan out to Rutherglen, Paisley, Renfrew and Clydebank, and on into Lanarkshire and Ayrshire. Drawings and a few photographs are generally enough to price a straightforward portal frame the same working day.
What steel erection covers
Steel erection means standing the frame your fabricator has made, bolting it up, lining and levelling it, and fitting bracing, secondary steel and LFS or SFS framing. It also means taking existing steel down for reconfiguration or reuse. Estate tenants can have us clad the new bay and move their machines into it once the frame is up.
What we do
What we erect in Glasgow
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Estate units and added bays | Hillington Park, Clydesmill and the estates off the M8 | Where the crane can stand in a working yard |
| Equipment platforms set to tolerance | Precision engineering and aerospace workshops | Floor levels and machines that stay in place |
| Plant floors and tank platforms | Distilleries, breweries and food halls | Shutdown dates and hygiene areas |
| Mezzanines and storage decks | Trade and warehouse units | Bringing members through the door and past stock |
| Light gauge framing and canopies | Riverside and city-centre schemes | The levels the crane reaches from each position |
| Frames taken down and re-erected | Units changing layout or tenant | Match-marks, and what holds the remaining steel up |

Sectors
Where we work in and around Glasgow
Glasgow steel work falls into these groups.
Tolerance steel for precision and aerospace work
Platforms, equipment frames and small extensions go into precision engineering and aerospace supply workshops, with steel set out to the tolerances the machines below need. See our aerospace sector page.
Platforms for distillers and brewers
Access platforms over washbacks and tanks, plant floors and support steel go into distilleries, breweries and food plants inside short shutdowns. See our food and beverages page.
Bays and mezzanines on Hillington Park
New units and added floor space go up across the park for firms of every size, usually beside a yard that stays in use. See our industrial sector page.
New homes and offices along the river
Light gauge infill, canopies and rooftop plant frames go up on residential, office and student schemes in the centre and on former quay and industrial land beside the Clyde. See our construction sector page.
Clydesmill, Cambuslang and the east side
Workshop extensions and trade units rise at Clydesmill and Glasgow Business Park, where new steel often ties into buildings from earlier phases.
New Albion and out towards Clydebank
Portal frame units, canopies over loading doors and small extensions go up on the New Albion estate and the trade units west of it towards Clydebank.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Glasgow
Five points shape a Glasgow erection plan before the steel is cut:
- Standing room on the grid. Central cross streets climb steeply and leave few level spots for outriggers, so our appointed person fixes positions and radii before fabrication, and the crane is chosen to fit them.
- Part-frames that stand. Every stop in the work leaves the frame stable, with temporary braces or guys holding it until the permanent bracing is fixed.
- Which council to ask. Glasgow City Council covers most addresses, but Hillington Park straddles the Renfrewshire boundary, Clydesmill falls under South Lanarkshire and Clydebank under West Dunbartonshire. We apply to the right one and arrange the traffic management and road closure.
- Trailer slots around the motorway. Central sites sit a few streets off the M8, so each trailer is booked for a quiet hour and loaded in lifting order, the crane taking members straight off the bed.
- Old workings and filled docks. Some riverside plots stand on infilled docks and parts of the east and south sit over former coal workings, so bearing is checked at each outrigger and mats sized to it, with a recheck after heavy rain.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
Take a Hillington workshop putting a mezzanine over its stores: production carries on below, and the existing frame is surveyed before any new steel is connected to it. With no crane able to reach, members come in through the shutter and go up on gantries, jacking equipment or the electric pick and carry crane, which puts out no fumes, so staff keep working close by.
Dismantling follows its own sequence, worked out so the frame left behind stays stable as each member is released. Steel bound for another layout or another site is match-marked piece by piece before it comes down.

Why Synergy
Why Glasgow firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Platforms set out to tolerance. Equipment support steel for precision and aerospace workshops is lined and levelled to the figures your machines need.
- Packages sized to a drinks shutdown. Platform and plant floor steel for distilleries and breweries is sequenced to fit the stop you have.
- Lift planner and gang on the same job. Our appointed person sets crane positions with the erection supervisor, and the gang rigging each piece bolts it up.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.
Services
More than steel erection
Alongside Glasgow steel work we also offer:
Process
How a steel erection job works
-
An enquiry needs the drawings, the steel schedule, the site’s address and the weeks the frame is programmed for.
-
We then visit the plot, looking at crane standings, ground, how trailers approach, lay-down room and overhead lines.
-
The appointed person writes a lift plan from what the visit found. The method statement and risk assessment that go with it cover the frame’s temporary stability.
-
Your fabricator gets our erection sequence and loads each trailer to it.
-
Erection, bracing, lining and levelling come last, and the frame is signed off to whichever trade is next.
FAQs
Common questions
Our unit on Hillington Park has a small yard. Where does the crane stand for a new bay?
A compact crane can often work inside a small yard. Where even that will not fit, it sets up on the estate road with the landlord’s agreement. Photographs of the yard and gable let us fix the position at quote stage.
Our distillery only stops in its silent season. Can new platform steel go in then?
Yes, if the steel is fabricated and the lift plan approved before the stop begins. The programme is built from the restart date, with members brought in the order they are fitted.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Send the drawings and the site address, and tell us the date the frame must be standing. For a unit on an estate, say whether the yard is shared with the neighbours and how wide the gate is.
We also provide steel erection in Grangemouth, Edinburgh, Dumfries and Cumbria. See all the steel erection locations.
