Overview

Steel erection in Grangemouth and across the Forth valley

In Grangemouth, steel goes up for the engineering and distribution firms on Earls Gate, Middlefield and Carronshore and for port businesses that need yard sheds and canopies. Commercial schemes and public buildings across Falkirk district add their share. Much of the area stands on flat reclaimed carse beside the estuary, which shapes where a crane can set up.

Most of it is portal frames, mezzanines and canopies. Port sheds on the carse tend to be long and wide, and we erect those too, bay after bay down the yard. We cover Grangemouth and Falkirk, Larbert, Stenhousemuir, Denny, Bo’ness, Polmont and Linlithgow. Drawings and site photographs of a yard shed or a new bay get it priced the same working day.

What steel erection covers

Your fabricator makes the steel and we put it up: columns and rafters stood and bolted, the frame lined and levelled, bracing and secondary steel fixed, and LFS or SFS framing erected where the design calls for it. Existing frames can also be taken apart, to be moved or rearranged. Where a shed needs sheeting as well, the walls and roof can follow the frame under one contract.

What we do

What we erect in Grangemouth

Structure Where it goes up What sets the method
Fabrication shops and engineering workshops Earls Gate, Middlefield and Carronshore Crane standings along the long side and the bay the bracing starts from
Storage sheds and yard canopies Port-side yards and stores Keeping yard vehicles clear of the crane’s working area
Warehouse extensions and added bays Units around Larbert, Denny and the M9 What the existing gable will carry once it is opened up
Mezzanines and internal floors Warehouses and trade units that stay open The opening the members come through and what the floor slab carries
Roof plant steel and access platforms Health centres, schools and council buildings in Falkirk district Load paths into the existing structure and hours set by the estates team
Steel moved to a new layout Units being reorganised across the Forth valley Match-marking and what keeps the remaining frame stable

Our steel erection and dismantling service page covers each part of the work.

Workshops at Earls Gate and Middlefield

Workshop bays, lean-tos and platform steel are added for engineering and fabrication firms here, with the shop next door carrying on. See our industrial sector page.

Commercial frames from Falkirk to Linlithgow

Frames, canopies and light gauge infill for commercial schemes go up from Falkirk town centre out to Polmont and Linlithgow. See our construction sector page.

Distribution units at Carronshore, Larbert and Denny

Portal frames for new distribution units and mezzanines inside existing warehouses go up on these estates, with stock still moving.

    Falkirk’s public buildings

Support frames for replacement chillers, access walkways and small link extensions go up on health centres, schools and council offices that stay open, lifting in hours the estates team agrees. See our healthcare and pharma and education pages.

    Planning

Access and planning for steel erection in Grangemouth

Before a Grangemouth frame gets a start date, we settle these five points:

    • Estuary gusts at eaves height. Nothing breaks the wind across the flat land by the Forth, and a light breeze in the yard can be a lot stronger up at the rafters. Large LFS panels and long purlins are the first lifts to stop, so each day’s sequence is checked against the forecast.
    • Carse land under the outriggers. Ground near the Forth is reclaimed carse, soft in places and crossed by drains and cables. Buried services are marked out first, then mats are sized to the bearing pressure at each standing.
    • Steel arriving by the M9 and M876. Trailers arrive loaded in erection order, and where a yard has no room for steel the crane lifts each member off the bed.
    • Part-built bays held by bracing or guys. Whenever work pauses, what is standing is stable, with temporary bracing designed in where the permanent bracing comes later.
    • Permits from Falkirk Council. When the crane or a delivery needs part of a road or footway, we apply to Falkirk Council, or to West Lothian Council for sites around Linlithgow, and provide the traffic management and road closure.

    Alterations

    Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling

When new steel goes into a Carronshore warehouse or any other building that carries on working, the existing frame is surveyed before anything connects to it. Mezzanines and internal platforms out of a crane’s reach are brought in through a loading door and raised on gantries and jacks between the racking runs.

Taking steel down follows a sequence planned around the part of the frame that stays up, so each member is supported until it is free. Anything going back up, whether in the same unit or on a new plot at Earls Gate, is match-marked first.

    Why Synergy

Why Grangemouth firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection

    • Workshop bays at Earls Gate and Middlefield. Engineering and fabrication firms there can have a bay, extension or platform steel added to the building they already occupy.
    • Machinery installed in the new building. Where a Falkirk district unit is taking new equipment, installing it can join the steel package.
    • Our own appointed person and our own gang. The lifts are planned in-house, and the gang slinging each member is the gang that bolts it in.
    • Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

    Process

How a steel erection job works

    1. Your general arrangement drawings, steel schedule, site address and programme dates give us the brief.

    2. A planner then sees the site, marking crane standings and noting the ground, the delivery approach, lay-down space and overhead lines.

    3. The appointed person sets out the lift plan, and the method statement and risk assessment with it describe the temporary bracing for every stage.

    4. Your fabricator sends the steel in an erection order agreed with us in advance.

    5. Columns go up first, then rafters and bracing; with the frame lined and levelled, the building is ready for the next trade.

    FAQs

    Common questions

A firm standing at every position it works from. We read the ground against any site investigation and your service drawings, then size the mats to spread each outrigger load. Attach any ground report to the drawings.

Yes. We survey the existing columns where the new bay connects, agree an exclusion zone around the crane with your team, and time the lifts for when the yard is quietest.

We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.

Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.
