Overview
Steel erection in Dumfries and across Dumfries and Galloway
Farms, sawmills, creameries and food plants across Dumfries and Galloway need steel for new sheds, extensions and platforms, and engineering and trade firms at Heathhall and Locharbriggs need units and mezzanine floors. Plenty of these sites sit at the end of a single-carriageway road or a farm track, so the way in is checked before a crane or trailer is booked.
Sheds and portal frames lead, followed by extensions, mezzanines and plant support steel. Bigger buildings come our way as well, such as a creamery’s new process hall with a plant floor and offices at one end. The work covers Dumfries, Annan, Lockerbie and Moffat, and west through Castle Douglas and Newton Stewart to Stranraer. Drawings and photographs of the yard let us price a new cattle or machinery shed that same working day.
What steel erection covers
Steel comes from your fabricator and we erect it: columns and rafters first, then bolting up, lining and levelling, the bracing, the secondary steel and any light gauge LFS or SFS framing. An old shed can come down too, when a yard is rearranged or the frame is moving to another farm. The new shed can be sheeted and roofed by the same team.
What we do
What we erect in Dumfries
| Structure | Where it goes up | What sets the method |
|---|---|---|
| Portal frame sheds and livestock buildings | Farms across Dumfries and Galloway | Room in the yard for the crane, and how many bays it covers from one spot |
| Extensions and new bays | Timber processing sites across the region | Log handling and saw lines working beside the new steel |
| Access platforms and process support steel | Dairy and food processing halls | Hygiene zones, and lifts timed into a production break |
| Portal frame units and workshops | Heathhall, Locharbriggs and the town’s other estates | The holding-down bolts and the order the bays go up |
| Mezzanines and storage floors | Engineering and trade units across the region | What the floor slab carries under each new column |
| Frames taken down and moved | Farm and industrial buildings being reorganised | The order members are released, and match-marks on each one |

Extensions, covered log and timber stores, and platforms over saw lines go up at mills and timber processing sites, fitted around their shutdowns. See our industrial sector page.
Workshops and trade units around Dumfries
New units, added bays and mezzanine floors are put up for engineering, fabrication and trade firms at Heathhall, Locharbriggs and the estates round the town. See our plastics and metals page.
Process platforms for creameries and food makers
Access platforms, tank support steel and small extensions go into dairy and food plants, with each member brought in to the site’s hygiene and cleaning rules. See our food and beverages page.
Stores and canopies from Annan to Stranraer
Warehouses, loading canopies and commercial frames go up in the towns along the A75, for distribution, agricultural supply and trade businesses. See our construction sector page.
Planning
Access and planning for steel erection in Dumfries
In Dumfries and Galloway, the plan for a frame starts with these:
- Soft ground and peat. Farm yards and new pads can carry less than they look, and peat carries very little. Each crane position has its bearing checked, and mats are brought to spread the outrigger load.
- Trailers on rural roads. Beyond the A75 and the A74(M), steel reaches site on single-carriageway roads with weak bridges and tight bends, and the last stretch can be a farm track. Trailer lengths are chosen for the route, with members packed in erection order where there is no lay-down.
- Crane set-ups decided with the fabricator. Our appointed person has the lift plan done ahead of the steel order, giving the fabricator a sequence to load each trailer by.
- Weather on exposed plots. Light gauge panels and long purlins get their own wind limit, and on a longer job the ground under the crane is rechecked after heavy rain.
- Every part-frame standing on its own. At every break, what has been erected has to stand without the crane, so temporary bracing or guys go in wherever permanent bracing comes later.
Alterations
Alterations, mezzanines and dismantling
A creamery or a sawmill will often keep producing while its new bay goes up. Before fabrication, the old frame and every connection the new steel will use get checked on site. Where a crane cannot reach inside, members come through the loading door and go up by gantry and jack, or on the electric pick and carry crane, which has no exhaust to reach a food hall.
Existing steel can also be taken down when a mill or food hall is reorganised. The release order keeps the rest of the frame standing, and each member for re-erection is match-marked before the trailer takes it.

Why Synergy
Why Dumfries firms choose Synergy Lifting for steel erection
- Sheds and extensions for farms and mills. Portal frame sheds, new bays and canopies go up for farming, timber and food businesses across the region.
- Sheeting added to the steel order. A new shed or store can be clad and roofed by us after the frame, so one order takes it from bare pads to weathertight.
- The lifting and the erecting are ours. Our appointed person plans each lift, and our own gang slings each member and bolts it up.
- Qualified and accredited. CPCS and CSCS carded operatives, lifts planned to BS 7121 by an appointed person, equipment inspected under LOLER and PUWER, SSIP approved, Constructionline Gold Member, certified to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, and members of the Construction Plant-hire Association.

More than steel erection

Process
How a steel erection job works
-
Let us see the drawings and steel schedule, and tell us the site address and the dates your programme sets.
-
A planner comes out to look at the approach, crane standings, the ground, room for lay-down and any power lines overhead.
-
The lift plan follows from our appointed person, together with a method statement and risk assessment that show how each part-built stage stays up.
-
We and your fabricator agree the loading order, so members come off each trailer ready to lift.
-
Our erectors raise the steel, brace it, line and level it, and hand the frame on to the next trade.
FAQs
Common questions
Our new shed is going up in a farm yard off a single-track road. What decides the crane?
The road in and the yard itself. Width, bends and any bridge limits on the way set the crane size and trailer lengths, and the yard ground sets the mats. Photographs of the approach and the yard help us choose.
We want to move a shed to another farm. Can the same steel go back up?
In most cases. The frame comes down in a set order with each member match-marked, so it goes back up the same way round. Your engineer checks it against the new site, and the new foundations are set out to the old column positions.
Who plans the lifts?
We do. An appointed person plans every lift to BS 7121: where the crane stands, what it can place from each position, and how the frame stays stable at every break in the work. The same gang then rigs and erects to that plan.
Can you erect steel where a crane cannot reach?
Yes. Mezzanines and internal platforms go up with gantries, jacking equipment and our electric pick and carry crane, which works indoors without fumes. The steel comes in through a door and is lifted into place inside the building.

Pricing anywhere in Dumfries and Galloway works from the fabricator’s drawings, the site postcode and your programme dates. If the shed is going up beside existing farm buildings, photographs of those help.
We also provide steel erection in Cumbria, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Grangemouth. See all the steel erection locations.
