Access and planning for lifts in Glasgow
Every site is different, but a few things come up again and again on Glasgow jobs:
- Getting there. The M8 runs through the city centre with the M73, M74 and M77 taking traffic round it. Central sites are usually reached off the M8, which makes timing part of the plan, and we route larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads around low bridges and weight limits before we quote.
- City-centre streets and the grid. The central grid has steep cross streets, loading restrictions and limited standing room, so we settle the standing position early because it decides the machine.
- Ground conditions. Riverside and dock land is reclaimed made ground, and parts of the city sit on old industrial and mining ground. We confirm ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
- Weather. Exposed riverside and estuary sites see wind and a lot of rain, so we plan lifts around wind limits and allow for the ground softening on longer jobs.
- Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Glasgow City Council as part of the job.

Common questions
Can a crane get into a unit on Hillington Park?
Usually, yes, though the yards vary a lot across the park. City cranes and pick and carry machines handle the tighter units, and where a yard is too small we look at reaching in from the estate road. Send us photos of the approach and the door opening.
Can you lift in the city centre during the day?
Sometimes, but the M8 approaches and the central loading restrictions often make an early morning, evening or Sunday lift the sensible option. Tell us the window you have and we’ll tell you what is realistic.
Can you place a machine to a fine tolerance?
Yes. Precision positioning is a different job from a heavy lift: the crane gets the load into the building, then skates, air bearings or jacking put it exactly where it needs to be. Tell us the tolerance and we’ll plan the method to it.
