First the machine is disconnected and made safe. Then it is rigged and extracted, transported, positioned, levelled and set down on its mounts. Heavier jobs bring in a crane and a low loader. Access and planning for a machine move in York

Points we check on most York jobs:

Getting loads in and out. The A64 is the main way into York for heavy loads, with the A19 north and south, the A59 from the west and the A1237 linking the northern estates. We check low bridges and weight limits on the route before we quote.
The walled centre. The bars have height and width limits, and several streets are one-way or pedestrian for much of the day. For a building inside the walls we confirm the vehicle route and where a crane or trailer can stand at survey.
Floors and ground. Older buildings and sites near the Ouse and the Foss can have weak floors or soft ground. We confirm what they will carry and spread the load with plates or mats.
Working hours. Central load-outs work best in the evening or on a Sunday, and we plan lighting and marshalling for those shifts.
Road closures. Where a load-out needs part of a road or pavement, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with City of York Council.

Moving large or heavy machinery by road

A vehicle and load over 44,000kg gross, 2.9m wide or 18.65m long is an abnormal load. Up to 80,000kg the highway and bridge authorities need two clear working days’ notice through ESDAL, rising to five above that, when the police need notice too. Loads over 2.9m wide or 18.65m long also need two clear working days’ notice to the police. Above 150,000kg or 6.1m wide a Special Order is needed, applied for about ten weeks ahead. We handle the notifications ourselves or with your haulier. Out of York, heavy loads generally take the A1237 onto the A64 towards the A1(M), or the A19 and A59.

Common questions

Can you move a machine into a building inside the city walls?

Yes, once we know the vehicle route and where a trailer or compact crane can stand. Send us the address and photos of the street and the doorway, and we will tell you what is workable, including whether the machine needs to go in as a whole or in sections, before you fix a date.

Can you move a food production line during a short shutdown?

Yes. We agree the break points and the order the line needs to come back in, then work to your hygiene and cleaning rules so the floor is ready for production when we leave. Tell us the length of the shutdown and we will plan the move to fit it.

Who disconnects and reconnects the machine?

Mechanical disconnection and making safe is usually ours, and we position the machine precisely enough for commissioning. Electrical and control reconnection is coordinated with your own engineers or the machine manufacturer, and who covers what is agreed at survey stage.

Can you move a machine that has broken down?

Yes. Breakdown work is prioritised because production has usually stopped. Call us with the machine details and we will give you a firm attendance time on the call.
