What dismantling covers
Plant comes off in the reverse of the order it went on, and that is what keeps the value in it. Some goes back up at another site, and some sells on as a working machine, match-marked and recorded as it is released. The rest is separated at the cut face so each grade can be weighed and sold.

Access and planning for dismantling in Sheffield
Each of these is settled before the first cut on a Sheffield job:
- Working above floor level. Most of the cutting happens up on structures and roofs, so platform positions, edge protection, what holds each section through the cut and the rescue plan are written first.
- Ground that falls away at the set-up position. A slope decides where a crane can level up here and how a section is restrained on the bed, so levels at the standing and loading points are taken at survey.
- What the plant held. Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification belong to the operator or a specialist, and cutting is booked against the shift each certificate covers.
- What the remaining steel carries. Members that have stood for decades hold up more than their own weight, so each stage is checked against what is left, and temporary support goes in where needed.
- Crane standing and the route off site. Down on the valley floor there are culverts and old foundations under the surface, so outrigger loads and mat sizes come first. Section sizes follow the way out, and closures go through Sheffield City Council.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Where plant has a rebuild waiting on it, the method changes before anyone picks up a torch. Each item is match-marked and its position recorded as it is freed, joints are undone at flanges and bolts, and parts are wrapped and crated for the journey. Machines sold on as working equipment are handled the same way.
Plant at the end of its life pays through segregation. Stainless is boxed away from carbon steel, cable and non-ferrous go to their own containers instead of the mixed skip, and steel is cut to sizes that weigh in cleanly. Most Sheffield jobs hold some of each. At survey we write down what is coming back to you and what goes for weight, and the cutting order follows those two lists.

How a dismantling job works
- Send us the plant, what was inside it and which parts you are keeping, with any photographs or drawings.
- We survey and develop the method, sequencing it so what is left standing holds itself at every stage.
- We issue the method statement, risk assessment and lift plan, and agree the certificates the site has to provide.
- Cutting, lifting down and segregation run in that order, the items you are keeping released first.

Common questions
How does a section reach the wagon from a yard that slopes?
Skates want level ground, so on a falling yard the section is lifted to the wagon instead of pushed to it. Levels are taken at survey, the crane sets up on the flattest ground in reach, and loading happens on the level part of the street.
The roof steel over our Attercliffe plant is low. How does it come out?
The plant is broken down where it stands and comes out through the widest door, sections sized to the headroom and the doorway. A roof panel opened up gives larger pieces a second way out.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
