What dismantling covers
Work runs backwards through the build sequence, which is what protects the value in each piece. Equipment with life ahead of it is released at its connections, match-marked, recorded and packed, then re-erected or sold on. Everything else is cut down for material, with metals held apart and sized for the weighbridge.

Access and planning for dismantling in Aberdeen
An Aberdeen job has these settled before any cutting starts:
- Crane standing, ground bearing and the route off site. Quayside edges, reclaimed ground and old yard surfaces are proved before an outrigger position is fixed. Sections leave by the A90 or A96, the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route keeping heavy loads off the city streets, and road space is arranged with Aberdeen City or Aberdeenshire Council.
- Cleaning and certification before any cut. Purging, cleaning and a gas-free certificate come from the site operator or the specialist it appoints, and the cutting is timed to the shift each one covers.
- Exposed work and the coastal weather. Anything lifted outdoors is checked against the crane chart and the shape of the load before a cutting date is set, and the programme carries a spare day.
- Load paths as the sequence goes on. A frame can carry far more than its own weight, so every stage is checked for what takes the load next, with propping in place before the cut that needs it.
- Getting to the plant and back down. Vessels, pipe bridges, silo tops and roof steel put crews above ground, so platform positions, edge protection, anchor points and rescue go into the method, each piece held before its connection goes.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Plant with working life left in it is treated as a kit to be rebuilt. Connections are undone at flanges and bolts wherever the build allows, each piece is match-marked and its position photographed, and items are wrapped and crated for the lorry and for store. Machinery heading to a buyer is treated the same way.
Where plant has finished, the value comes out of careful separation. Carbon steel and stainless go to different piles, cable and non-ferrous fill containers of their own, kept well clear of mixed waste, with sections cut to sizes a weighbridge takes. Send the list of what you are keeping, and those pieces leave an Aberdeen site whole before the torch reaches anything else.

How a dismantling job works

Common questions
Can the bays either side of an Altens test hall keep working?
Yes. The area is fenced and agreed with your engineering team, and the exclusion zone moves as frames come down. Where a torch would reach a live bay, the joint parts cold.
Does the weather decide when a coastal job gets done?
It sets the outdoor days. Wind limits follow the crane chart and the section’s shape on the hook, and indoor cutting fills a lost day.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
