Access and planning for dismantling in Edinburgh
Settled on an Edinburgh job while the method is still being written:
- Working at height and the way down. Structures, roof plant and pipe bridges put the crew above ground, so access, anchor points, edge protection and rescue are agreed first.
- What holds up what. Plant carries loads no drawing shows, so the cutting order leaves what remains sound at each stage, with temporary steel where a removal leaves neighbours short.
- What ran through the plant. A gas-free certificate comes from the operator or from a specialist it brings in, the cutting is timed to the shifts those certificates cover, and hot work limits are set at survey.
- The World Heritage centre and the tram. In the Old and New Towns the setts, the climbs, the bus lanes and the protected frontages leave few places a crane or wagon can sit, so that position is fixed first, and work near the tram overhead lines has its clearance settled beforehand.
- Crane standing, ground bearing and the route out. The centre runs from rock in one street to made ground and old cellars in the next, and the waterfront was built out over water, so mat sizes and outrigger loads suit the actual position. Sections are sized to the route off site, and closures go through the City of Edinburgh Council, West Lothian, Midlothian, East Lothian or Fife.
Dismantling for reuse, or for recovery
Plant with a new home waiting is picked out at survey, before the method is written. Items are match-marked and recorded as they come free, joints are opened at flanges and bolts wherever one will come apart, and pieces are packed for the lorry and the store. A machine sold on gets the same care.
At the end of a plant’s life the value is all in separation. Carbon steel and stainless are landed apart, cable and non-ferrous are binned separately and never with the mixed waste, and steel is sized to weigh in cleanly. A West Lothian works giving up a line and a Leith yard clearing a shed both mix the two aims, so name what you want back and the cutting order brings it down early and whole.

Common questions
Can a line come out of a Livingston unit while the rest runs?
Yes. The area is fenced on a boundary agreed with you, the sequence follows the hours you can release, and cutting goes cold where neighbouring bays cannot take hot work.
How do cut sections get away from a Fife or Lothians site?
Piece sizes are fixed at survey to suit the route. The A720 carries sections round to the M8 or the A1, and a Fife address puts wide loads over a Forth crossing chosen before wagons are booked.
How is dismantling different from demolition?
Demolition takes a structure down and the value is in the cleared site. Dismantling takes plant apart in the reverse of the order it went up, so what comes off keeps its value as equipment, as parts, or as material worth more separated than mixed. The planning takes longer and the work is slower, and on the right job it pays for itself.
Who cleans and certifies the plant before cutting?
Cleaning, purging and gas-free certification sit with the site operator or a specialist, and the sequence is planned around those certificates. Several are valid for one shift only, so the cutting is arranged to match when they can be issued. We agree all of that at survey and write it into the programme.
