Access and planning for lifts in Aberdeen

• Getting there. The Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route has made a real difference to moving heavy plant around the city, and the A90 and A96 bring cranes in from the south and the west. Larger all-terrain cranes and ballast loads are routed around low bridges and weight limits, and we plan the route before we quote.
• Harbour and permit-controlled sites. Port and energy sites have their own inductions, permits and vehicle rules, and lifts fit around vessel and cargo movements rather than the other way round.

• Ground conditions. Quaysides, reclaimed harbour ground and yard surfaces built up over decades all need checking. We confirm ground bearing and outrigger positions, and use crane mats where needed.
• Road closures. Where a lift needs part of a road or pavement closed, we can arrange the traffic management and road closure with Aberdeen City Council or Aberdeenshire Council as part of the job.

Common questions

Can you work inside the harbour estate?

Yes. Harbour sites mean inductions, permits and vehicle rules, and lifts planned around vessel and cargo movements. Tell us the berth or yard and what the site requires and we’ll build it into the lift plan.

What happens if the wind stops the lift?

We plan for it. Wind limits come from the crane’s chart and the shape of the load, and on exposed sites we agree in advance what happens if the forecast turns, so the decision is made before the crane is on hire rather than on the day.

Can you work to our own lifting standard?

Yes. A lot of energy clients have their own lifting and documentation requirements on top of BS 7121, and we’re used to producing lift plans and RAMS to a client’s format. Send us the standard with your enquiry.
