Access and planning for a factory move in Cardiff

Points we check on most Cardiff relocations:

Where the new building sits. A move out to Newport, Caerphilly or Barry crosses into another council’s area, and the loads join the M4 by the A48(M) or the A4232.
The receiving unit on its dates. Floor, bases, power, air and a way in for each item are given dates on the programme, and we check the building against them as the loads approach.
How each machine leaves. Shutter widths, internal headroom and turning room in the yard decide the method, which goes on the asset register beside each weight.
Floors under skates and jacks. Made ground around the Bay, cellars under older streets, low yards on the levels and an unknown slab at the new address all get checked, and mats or plates spread the load.
Road space and oversized items. Where a load-out takes part of a street, we arrange the traffic management and closure with Cardiff Council, or with the Vale of Glamorgan, Caerphilly or Newport at the other end. The M4 and the trunk roads are the Welsh Government’s, run through its trunk road agent, and abnormal loads are notified where needed.

Keeping production going during the move

Output does not have to stop while the plant moves. The lines you can spare go over first and are making product at the new address before the rest follows, and a line that can only stop briefly moves over a weekend or your shutdown. A firm leaving a unit off Penarth Road for a larger shed at Wentloog runs both for a while.

Handing back one building and opening another rarely fall on the same date, so storage bridges the gap and equipment arrives once the bases are cured. Plant left behind goes for sale or disposal in the same visits.

Common questions

We are moving from Cardiff to a unit in Newport. Who applies for the road space?

Cardiff Council covers the city streets and Newport City Council the roads at the far end, so the move runs on two applications and we make both. The M4 between them is a Welsh Government trunk road, and abnormal loads are notified separately.

Our unit shares a yard with other tenants. How is loading managed?

By booking slots and keeping the yard usable while we work. Lorries come forward one at a time with a banksman, and the marked route from the door is agreed with the estate manager beforehand.

Can we keep producing while we move?

In most cases, yes, for part of the plant. We move the lines you can spare first and get them running at the new site, then bring the rest across. It means more visits, and it keeps output going while the move is under way. We tell you at survey which parts can overlap.

How are disconnection and recommissioning handled?

We agree who does what at survey and write it into the programme. It is a mix of our crew, your maintenance team and the equipment manufacturers, and everyone knows their part before the first machine moves. Recommissioning is done with your engineers or the manufacturer.
